Hi All,
I'm a bit stuck on this one
I have a John also listed on records as John Edward Harrison who I can't progress further back than his marriage in 1896.
His marriage was to Caroline Cartwright on 8th July 1896 at St Philomen's Church, Toxteth, Liverpool and states that his Father was called James Harrison who worked as a plasterer and that at the time of the marriage he was aged 25.
The 1901 census with John and Caroline and their only child at that point Margaret states that he was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria.  However on the 1911 census it states he was born in Liverpool.
These records and others have variations on his name stating John and John Edward or John E but I cannot find any match other than a birth in 1872 (Q4) in Whitehaven but I cannot match it up to link with 1891 or 1881 census showing him.
The 1939 Electoral Register has him on in Liverpool at 62 Rosebery Street as John E and born on 12th November 1872 which would match his birth registration but frustratingly no other family is living with him as they have already got married or have died.
Can anyone help get me further back from 1896?  After this date I am happy with my findings on the family.
Thanks
Phil

Did you see that the 1891 census has a James Harrison, 52, plasterer from Whitehaven, living in Cornwallis Street, Liverpool with wife Ann, 57, from Mold?

have you seen this one for 1881

John   Greenlaw   Head   Married   Male   36   1845   Sailor   Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
Mary A   Greenlaw   Wife   Married   Female   32   1849   -   Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
John   Harrison   Stepson   Single   Male   12   1869   Scholar   Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
Jackson   Greenlaw   Son   Single   Male   1   1880   Scholar   Whitehaven, Cumberland,

Mary Harrison married John Greenlaw in 1876 though John is perhaps a little too old

edit - not the right one as Mary A in 1871 is married to John Harrison but will leave for reference

Great find ShaunJ much appreciated :-)
He had lots of driving jobs throughout his life so that would definitely be him in 1891 I'm sure of it.
I did also clock a James Harrison plasterer myself in 1891 but dont recall tying it up with anything positive - could be.
There's also the curveball that lancsann has just posted!  :-\ :o
Plus the added curveball of was he born in Whitehaven at all as that's 2 census's that have him as born in Liverpool

1871, one James born 1838 Isle of Man. Plasterer married to one Mary Ann, living in Liverpool:

1881: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27L-W6DB

There is a possible 1867 HARRISON/BUCKLEY marriage, but they may just be the folks of the John Buckley HARRISON child, as per 1881.

John Harrison birth registered in December Quarter 1872 mother's maiden name given as IRVING

I assume this is the birth:

HARRISON, JOHN mmn IRVING
GRO Reference: 1872  D Quarter in WHITEHAVEN  Volume 10B  Page 607

The mother may have been previously married, so could have a different surname on FreeBMD.

I see nothing going forward at WHITEHAVEN, but there are these working backwards:

HARRISON, MARY mmn IRVING
GRO Reference: 1864  M Quarter in COCKERMOUTH  Volume 10B  Page 507

HARRISON, WILLIAM mmn IRVING
GRO Reference: 1867  J Quarter in COCKERMOUTH  Volume 10B  Page 523

I see no marriage.

Yes agreed - Whitehaven is appearing to be a bit of a red herring personally
