Cars/ (Ears?) near Winlaton, Durham
« on: Friday 31 July 20 17:49 BST (UK) »
Is there a place near Winlaton, Durham that could appear on the 1851 census as Cars (but transcribed as Ears)

In 1871 the place of birth changes to Garton

In 1861 and 1881 it is Winlaton and 1891 Blaydon (these three I am OK with).

I do believe it is the same person in all the census , that is William Mains born c1827 at Winlaton.

I did search an 1857 OS map but that did not help

1851 census  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGJR-K55 (translated as Ears on Ancestry)

1871 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VB8W-6QW (translated as Garton on Ancestry)

There is a baptism of a William Mains of Blaydon Burn in the Ryton parish registers for 22 April 1827 on findmypast

Thank you
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

There was a Carr House in Winlaton Parish, which was pretty extensive in the 1820's/1830's.
It was in Chopwell Township, and is mentioned in the Schedule for Enumeration District 9 of the census of Winlaton Parish where it is just called the Carrs.

Thank you, they are very useful links. The link to John gives the place of abode as The Carrs so that ties in with what Jen found and the place "Cars" being given for William's place of birth on one of the censuses.

Alas for John the picture is not so good, baptised on the 19th April and buried on the 29th April.

This has been a useful exercise as i am not satisfied William is the William I think he is and found a new person in John who i was not previously aware of.

Thank you both you have been a great help.
