Alfred Richardson
« on: Saturday 01 August 20 15:49 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help?

George Richardson was, apparently, born in Glasgow around 1864.
He married Sarah Cookson Hancock in Rotherham Minster on the 17th May 1885, naming his father as Alfred Richardson, a potter.
Both witnesses were related to Sarah, so they don't help with the mystery.

Shortly after their marriage the couple relocated to Wingate, County Durham, where George was employed as a coal miner (he too had given his occupation as a potter when he married.)
He died there in 1903.
All the census he appears on with Sarah he states that he was born in Glasgow.

I have found an Alfred Richardson, born c1827 on the Scottish 1841 census, living in Tilefield Street, Glasgow, with his parents, Peter and Jane Richardson, and their other children, Catherine, William, George and Robert.
Peter (born c1790) and Jane, (born c1801), along with their elder children, Catherine (1825), Alfred and William (1830), where all born in England, whilst, George (1832) and Robert (1836), where born in Lanarkshire.
Peter was a pottery labourer, as was Alfred.

I suspect that Alfred may be George's father, but I cannot trace any of the family after 1841, nor can I find George prior to his marriage.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

Sue

What does he have as his residence at time of the marriage please?

Not having any luck I'm afraid but Alfred would be late 30's when George was born so likely to have had other children.

England as a birthplace is not helpful is it  :-\  but maybe there is a marriage for Alfred pottery person somewhere?

Yes - what started out as, what I thought, would be a fairly simple exploration, once I had George's marriage certificate, has turned into a proper mystery!

Can't really get any further until I find George with his parents, Alfred and his (unknown) wife.

Cheers

Sue

There are only 5 George Richardsons born in Lanarkshire between 1860 - 1870 on Scotlands People, none have Alfred as a father and two are illegitimate with no father's name.

If we take the children of Alfred & Catherine in 1851 we have James born Byker & Mary born Byker.

James has mother's maiden name as Caldwell
Mary has mmn as Coldwell.

1861 census has a Robert (aged 4 born England) mmn Caldwell.

Suggest ref below is that of George c1864 and not born Scotland.

RICHARDSON, GEORGE       CALDWELL

Unless I am reading your posts incorrectly you have Alfred from 1851/61/71/81.

It would appear from census and gro records that Alfred had at least 11 children ( 7 with Catherine &  4 with Sarah ) as well as Sarah's son Daniel whom shared his household.

Strange that Alfred & Catherine were having children from 1848 onward's but did not marry until 1858.
