Help with school record - please

I would be very grateful if someone could try to decipher the word in brackets between "David" and "Big Yard"; the column is for the name of the parent of the child. It has me completely foxed!

Thank you all for your really helpful and fast replies! I had seen that the 1901 census listed David's mother as a widow and I had also noticed David and his sisters wedding certificates also noted that their father was dead but intriguingly another sibling's wedding certificate from a similar time did not list her father as dead. William (David's father) was in court in 1893 for beating his wife and I wondered if the family simply chose to say he was dead so I was looking for collaborating information but could not make out the word on the school report. The other piece of my puzzle is that I can't find a death registered for William between about 1893 and 1901!
Thank you again for all your input!
