William George Thomas (b. abt 1815) and Matilda Chaloner of Chester
« on: Sunday 02 August 20 11:56 BST (UK) »

I'm looking for census records for William George Thomas, born abt 1815, and place of birth of his wife Matilda Chaloner who died in 1844.

William George Thomas was sometimes just called George, and their children were as follows:

Matilda 1837 Chester, Cheshire
William 1839 Chester, Cheshire
Aaron 1841 Chester, Cheshire
Maria, 1843 Chester, Cheshire

I think Matilda his wife died in 1844 in Chester, Cheshire. The 1841 census has her born outside the county.

The children were living with an aunt and uncle, Thomas and Ann Vernon, on the 1851 census but I can't find the connection. Was Ann Matilda's sister?

There is a birth registration for Henry Vernon, 1839, Great Boughton with mmn Thomas but also one in 1840 with mmn Brookes.

Thomas Vernon married Ann Thomas in 1822

So Ann looks to be William George’s sister.

Thanks. Any idea what happened to William George Thomas after the 1841 census? I would presume he died if his children were living with an uncle, but not necessarily.

It’s difficult with the choice of first names and the fairly common surname.

On daughter Maria’s marriage in 1864, he is shown as deceased.

What about the other children? Did they marry?

Doesn't seem like it. Aaron is single on later censuses.

Matilda's death in 1844 has her born ca.1819.

Her baptism:

Matilda Chaloner bp.7/3/1819 St. Martins in the Fields, London, dau. of Mary Chaloner, servant, abode as St. Mary on the Hill, Chester..

Thanks very much Annette. Would have never thought to check that baptism.
