"Ind" is a bit odd for a labourer.

He'd been in prison for debt in 1829:

THE Creditors of Thomas Colegate Wood, formerly of Wittersham, then of Appledore, next of Sheerness, and late of Wittersham aforesaid, all in the County of Kent, Innkeeper, an Insolvent Debtor in confinement in Dover Castle, are requested to meet on Saturday the 9th day of May next, at Twelve o'Clock at Noon, at the Office of Mr. Price, Solicitor, 27, Arundel-Street, Strand, London, for the purpose of appointing an Assignee or Assignees of the said Insolvent's estate and effects.

The image has now been removed due to copyright reasons. Could it have been an abbreviation of Innkeeper?

For anyone wanting to look the reference is HO 107/479/20/9/10

It definitely says Ind(ependen)t. The squiggle at the end isn't 'a', as suggested in the original posting, its a superscript 't'  :)

He's a labourer at the time of the baptism of his son Frederick in June 1840. So did he receive an inheritance between then and June 1841 ?
