There are five Huntly births, John, 1911, William 1917, James 1920, Alexander 1922 and George 1924.

Whether any of these are the brothers, further research will be required.

George is remembered at the Cassino Memorial, although he was killed in the Anzio area.

George is also listed on the Gartly War Memorial, with a reference on it to L(ower) Shanquhar http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic123.html

Monica,

Shanquhar is south of Huntly maybe 2-3mi but the two I mentioned were all in the village at that time.  I did looked at the Valuations up too 1940 and all the Martins were in the village.  However the WWII memorial in Huntly has no Martin's listed.

Hi All,

Good info there

a summary of what I have....

The parents stayed at Birkenhill Cottage, Gartly (1940) - British Newspaper Archive, and Little Shanquhar, Gartly (1944/45) although Valuation Role has a Peter there in 1940. Father possibly called Peter based on Newspaper articles. The newspapers just say MR & Mrs Martin.

They had 5 sons, and using articles from 1940, 1944 and 1945

John – Captured 1940 and became POW– Dunkirk. Married
George – Killed, age 19, April 1944 in Italy (On Gartly War Memorial)
William – Captured became POW– Singapore
Alexander -Gordon Highlanders
James – Sgt in Royal Engineers

Either James or Alexander lost a foot in the war. based on Sept 1945 Newspaper article.

George was enlisted into General Services Corps, before being transferred to 2nd Bn North Staffordshire Regiment. Who is main focus of my book.

Just to add a little more information to what has already been given -

George is commemorated on the Gartly War Memorial  -  see  www.kinnethmont.co.uk/gartly  and scroll down to his name  -

It reads as follows   GEORGE MARTIN
(Little Sanquhar on W.M. believed correct, born Aberdeenshire)
Private 14350165  2nd Bn. North Staffordshire Reg.
Who died on Friday 7 April 1944 Age 19

Additional information  -  No next of kin listed with CWGC.

From this I would say that the only way to clarify who his parents were is to order his birth certificate from Scotlandspeople. At the moment I don't think this is possible because of Covid restrictions, sorry.

Found some more info, 2nd December 1944 (P&J)

Sapper James Martin-  landmine injury.  It talks about his brothers, and George is still missing (7 months on). So Alexander is still in Italy, William and John are POWs.

It says the parents now reside at Shanquhar Cottages Gartly, but the family were brought up in Huntly.
