Dorrie, do you have any details on Jane Hall? Wandering how old she was and parents' names. Was having a look in the census for 1901 and saw this entry which may be for her daughter Annie. But there is also a Jane Mitchell aged 4 and wondered whether she could also be another daughter for Jane?

Adam Gatherer 46 gen. lab. b. Rothiemay, Banffshire
Jane Gatherer 52 b. Grange, Banffshire
Margaret Innes 23 daughter b. Huntly
Annie Mitchell 2 Gd Niece b. Huntly
Jane Mitchell 4 Gd Niece b. Grange, Banffshire

Address: 7 Bleachfield St (common Lost House), Huntly

On her marriage certificate to John Martin she gives her parents as - William Hall and Charlotte m.s. Tough. Jane gives her age as 26.

P.S. As you know the Valuation Rolls only go up to 1940 unfortunately.

Hi Monica

The grandson bit....see attached last line of the article attached. but I think it means 4 sons-in-laws in forces and also had a grandson. it's in P&J Sept 44

I was researching WW2 Auxiliary Units (as I am the Aberdeenshire researcher -https://www.staybehinds.com/index.php/ ) in the Gartly Area and have two Martin's listed. This is what led me to look into George Martin, It appears unrelated see link below, i have the same photo but with hats off, and he looks late 40s/50s

The names I have on the Gartly Patrol
https://www.staybehinds.com/patrol/gartly-patrol

Sergeant   William   Innes
Private   George   Martin
Private   James or John?   Martin
Private   J   Macrae
Private   J   Stuart

Alan

Good Morning Alan,

Thanks for posting that extra information for us. You certainly have your work cut out with all that research. It all makes interesting reading.

Is there anything else we can help you with?

Hi Dorrie

Thanks for your help, as well as the others who helped identify the Martins.

My next mission is related to George Martin, it's to trace what happened to a Private J.V.Hewitt of 2nd Bn North Staffordshire Regiment.  id no 3461018

He was with George Martin when the Germans attacked, I can't find any reference that he was killed, and trying to find him on a POW list. not on CWGC so possibly survived.

The 2 N. Staffs, had people from all over the country, so no idea where he is even from....

Hi Alan we are always pleased to help on Rootschat.

Can I suggest that you start a new topic on the WW2 board for Private JV Hewitt. There are many experts on there who may be able to help. One that comes to mind is MaxD.

Cheers Dorrie

Have posted it, but on Lancashire board (didn't see a WW2 one) as I think it is John Vincent Hewitt, Born 1911

It may be he is still missing, but equally could have survived war!

Hi Alan

As Dorrie says, thank for for the newspaper clip of the Martin brothers and additional details  :)

I was thinking about Dorrie's find yesterday and the discovery of the daughter for Jane Hall before she married. I think her husband is probably the fourth son in law that we were missing and her son the grandson referred to therein.

Good luck with your research!
