Cartwright/Ward
« on: Monday 03 August 20 20:12 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for a marriage between William Cartwright (B c1814) and Ann Ward (b1823) for a long time. They were unmarried but living in the same household in Tempest Hey Liverpool in 1841 And their first child Hannah was born in 1842.
I wondered as Ann was under 21 if they could have gone to Scotland to marry but not sure how to look for this. Ann’s father Adam had died in 1839

I have all the information on the family both forward and backward. Just the marriage defeats me. Of course they might never have married.

Thank you Carole.
I guess they just did not get married. Unfortunately as a policeman in 1841 I think William must have been docks police as Lancashire police have no record that I can find. By the birth of his daughter in 1845 he was still a policeman but by the birth of his 2nd son in 1847 he was no longer a policeman

Just on the off chance I looked for a marriage in London as William was born there and also in Cheshire as some of my Liverpool lot decided to marry "over the water"

For whatever reason - it doesn't look as though they married

William was actually born in Birmingham. For some reason the one census has London, all the rest say Birmingham. I have traced his parents there as William kindly left a will naming his brother in law as executor who had a very unusual job of cemetery keeper And one of his daughter had a middle name of his mother’s maiden name as did one of his nieces. Another daughter had the middle name of Ward. (Still trying to find the Rimmer connection which was the middle name of the 2 youngest children.)

I did wonder if he had originally been a London policeman and when the enumerator asked perhaps ‘where did you come from’ he replied with the last place he had lived

Thanks for trying though Carole.

Is there a Liverpool Police archive?  I can’t see a definite answer to that by searching.
William might have been married previously but it would be difficult to trace unless he was already a policeman I suppose, for the occupation to be helpful.

Thanks Garstonite.

Yes they are all children of William plus a couple more. Some seem to have been baptised in pairs. I admit to not really taking in the fact that Hannah was not baptised first. I have only just come back to looking at this family again after a gap of about 7 years. Now been looking at the Birmingham side.

Hannah was interesting. Her marriage certificates were published in Family Tree magazine as an example of someone being married twice on the same day, once in the CofE church to make it recognised by them as Hannah was CofE and once in the RC church so that the marriage was condpsidered valid by the Catholic Church. (Irrelevant to this query I know but I just found it an interesting fact)

I have all the census details for all the family plus marriages etc.
In 1851 William is described as a labourer so I guess as office keeper, a position and place he lived until he died, he was not still a policeman.

I have not got the details to hand but I think one of his sons took on the same position after William died.
