Are either of the children now deceased?
Are they on the 1939 register?

Do you have the birth certificate for either child?

Only a thought that Wesson may well have been the original maiden name of the mother.  If the marriage to Mr Broughton was her second marriage then that would be shown with a different surname.

I have an instance of Archbell marrying Ridehalgh, but the daughter's birth registration shows mmn as Ashworth.  Miss Ashworth married Mr Ridehalgh and he died in WW1.  She then went on to marry Mr Archbell with the surname of Ridehalgh.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Neither of the children are showing on the 1939 Register.
So they may still be alive.

I agree that a Birth Certificate is now required.

Both boys births are also registered in the surname 'Sheffield' which may well suggest that the parents weren't married.   A Mary E. Wesson married a Robert H. Sheffield in Sept.1924 Nottingham. (Mary Ellen Wesson birth Mar.1906).

1939 Register index shows Robert Sheffield married but not with family - cannot find Mary E. as either Sheffield or Broughton but did find death for a Mary E. Sheffield, born circa 1906, died Dec.1949 Nottingham.

So, if this Mary Ellen Wesson was the mother of the 2 boys, doesn't look like there was ever a marriage between her and a Mr. Broughton although they had 2 sons together registered with his surname and her legal surname of Sheffield.  She died as Sheffield 1949 when the boys would have been 18 and 15 and presumably boys were then with their father.

Unless you get one of the birth certificates I don't think you'll be able to find out who 'Mr.' Broughton was.

Thanks very much for all this,
I now know there was no marriage but can continue tracing ancestors.
