GUYANA Basil Lorenzo Durant
« on: Wednesday 05 August 20 23:50 BST (UK) »
Hi I am looking for information on my Grandad Basil Lorenzo Durant born in Guyana in 1936. I have been told that he was actually born Basil Lorenzo Grant but his surname was changed by his mother. He married my Grandmother Verna Durant nee Peters (deceased) in England in 1954, I found an entry on Ancestry.com but cannot see the actual certificate. She was also born in Guyana in 1938 and I believe that she travelled to England in 1954. I do not have any information about him after 1956 when my mother was born. My grandfather died in England but I cannot find a death certificate or any other information on him. Can anyone help me find out any further information?

Hello Dimpz and welcome to RootsChat.

The marriage of Basil DURANT and Verna PETERS can be found on freebmd.org.uk

Sep qtr 1954 at Greenwich (5c/1326)

You could order the certificate from the GRO to find out more info.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

There are 3 children born with surname DURANT and mother's maiden name PETERS on FreeBMD: 1955, 1956, and 1957 all registered at Grenwich (and a few with surname DURRANT, though these may not be yours?)

I can't see a suitable death for Basil, will keep looking.  :)

Hi Maddys52,

Thank you for your help with this.

The 3 children are my mum and her 2 siblings whom I am in contact with.

I have requested a copy of the marriage certificate.

Thanks again for helping.

Just to add:

Verna DURANT - born 24 Jul 1937, died 4 Oct 2004 Waltham Forest  (2551B)  Reg B66  Entry Number 238
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:CBT4-W93Z

There is a tree attached to this record which says she was born in Georgetown, East Demerara, Guyana. (These trees are not always accurate  ;) )

I ordered and received a copy of my Nan and Grandad's Marriage certificate. My great Grandfather's name was listed as Prince Durant. I have searched for his name but again have not been able to come up with anything.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Maddy,

On the marriage certificate,
Did Basil have any middle name listed, and what was his occupation, address and age?
Did his father have any occupation listed?
Are the witness' known to you - if not can you  search for them, for any possible connection (can't list them here though in case still living).

Also, could I ask when was the last known 'sighting' of your grandfather?

I also wondered, how you know he was born in 1936?

Cheers,
Ambly
