Hi!  I have a question regarding my grandmothers marriage. In the 1881 census record that I found, it says that she was already married at the age of 19 years old.  The Marriages and Banns says that she was 21 years of age when married and my grandfather was 21 years of age. Information is as follows on the marriage ban:

Grandmother is Catherine Riley, (maiden name is Stewart) Born in Perth, Scotland.
Grandfather is Joseph William Riley.  Born Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Marriage date is 8 Sept 1879
Marriage place is St. Mary’s Church, EdgeHill, Parish of West Derby, County of Lancaster.

Could there be an error on the Marriage ban or census record?

Thank you. Terri Kessler

What was Catherine’s birthdate? She could have lied or be economical with the truth about her age. By stating she was 21 she did not need her parent’s permission to marry. However without her birthdate you don’t have proof of how old she was and she may not have known her birthdate.

Is this your Catherine?
Catherine Stewart
Birth Date - 8 Apr 1862
Birth Place - Perth,Perth,Scotland
Father - William Stewart
Mother -Christina Malloch

It does give her father's name as William on the marriage record. As has been said no proof of age was needed so could just say 21 and been believed. She sticks with the 1862/63 birth date on the 1901/1911 censuses.

The marriage was by Licence, and the Allegation can be viewed on FindMyPast.  Joseph states that he is aged 21 and upwards, a Bachelor,  and that Catherine is a spinster aged 21 and upwards.  The Allegation is dated 25 September 1879.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

baptism records of Catherine / Christopher / John and Lily - these Roman Catholic records didn't start until 1883 - so I presume there are a couple of older children as well
Catherine is baptised at ST JOSEPH - the other 3 at St Michael ..

1883-6218   ST JOSEPH   282-JOS-1-6 (34)   1883   CATHERINE   RILEY   JOSEPH      CATHERINE   STEWART

1887-6067   ST MICHAEL   282-MIC-1-3 (53)   1887   CHRISTOPHER   RILEY   JOSEPH      CATHERINE   STUART

1892-5904   ST MICHAEL   282-MIC-1-3 (250)     1892   JOHN   RILEY   JOSEPH      CATHERINE   STEWART

I do have her birth date as April 8, 1862 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Marriage date was 09/25/1879 to Joseph William Riley. Her father is William Stewart and mother is Christina Malloch. I am on Ancestry.com.  She had 8 children: Catherine, 1883; Lillian 1885, Christopher, 1888, John, 1891; May, 1894; Eleanor, 1896, William, 1899, and Edward 1902.

So no proof of age was required?

Thanks to all!

Terri

There was also a baby Mary, born 12th December 1881 and baptised 24th January 1882.
She presumably died.

Where did you find that?  I am on ancestry.com and have not found that one?

Thank you!
