D M REES, b. abt 1873 draper in Rhymney
« on: Thursday 06 August 20 14:42 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate very much any help in finding the birth/origins of D M REES in order to see whether he links into my family.

The reason for my query is that a "D M REES" is named as the informant on the death certificate of my ancestor, Edward W REES who died in Bedlinog in 1905.  He is Edward's son, living at "the American Stores".

The Monmouthshire Guardian 30 January 1914 lists a D M REES, draper, as a mourner in the funeral of Police Sergeant Doolan of Rhymney.

Kelly's 1911 directory has Daniel REES as a draper, Albion House, 32 Upper High Street, Rhymney.

And the 1911 census has Daniel REES, draper 38 yrs b. Aberayron Cards with his wife Mary Anna REES, assistants Jessie PATTERSON and Gwladys THOMAS who was also a sister-in-law in Rhymney.

And that is all I have about this Daniel M REES.  But is he the missing informant??

In approx 1876, Edward W REES had moved to Rhymney (from Cardiganshire, where his wife had family) and lived at 3 Carno Street.

The son of a schoolmaster and parish clerk, Edward W REES had been a draper back in the 1850s in Aberystwyth.  By 1861 to approx 1875, he was an innkeeper in Lampeter until becoming bankrupt and moving briefly to his in-laws in Llansantffraed, Cards.

When his son David William REES was born in Rhymney in 1877, Edward was a draper living at Field St Rhymney.  By 1881,he was a coal miner.  He is buried in St Davids Rhymney though having moved to Bedlinog years by 1891.  (My point is that drapery was a family trade.)

Of course an error could have been made by the registrar - but I know of only 2 sons of Edward REES:  Jonathan Marsden REES b. Lampeter 1861 and David William REES b. Rhymney 1877 neither of whose initials fit that of the informant.  I have lots of info about them.   They moved to Bedlinog as their father had done.

Jonathan Marsden REES aged 19 had a grocery business in Mill Street Gelligaer in 1881 and at the time of Edward's death was a grocer in Bedlinog.  David William REES was working underground in 1901 and 1911 so he is unlikely to be the informant on the death certificate.

I have also wondered why Edward W REES would move his family from Cardiganshire to Rhymney after being made bankrupt in 1875.  "Edward REES" is on the electoral roll in Rhymney from 1876 - but of course, knowing my luck, there might have been 2 people called Edward REES living in Carno Street Rhymney at the time!!

Any thoughts from Rootschatters are always appreciated.

Many thanks

There's this in a "Grocers" listing for Bargoed - not far from Bedlinog:

Wow Shaun!

How did you find that reference so quickly?  I have been searching for years for "American Stores" - anywhere - and found nothing.  A grocery business...

What year is that directory?

It makes me wonder whether there were 2 shops - the death cert does say "American Stores Bedlinog" but the Rees Bros name is very interesting!

Many thanks

I don't know ! it was one of a couple of similar hits that came up on a Google search.

I have since found two brothers - David John Rees and Evan Thomas Rees - in business as grocers at 22 Hanbury Road, Bargoed around the period that you are interested in.

Thanks again - I don't know why my google search hasn't come up with "American Stores" before!

Anyway - thanks for the names - looks like there could be a lot of investigative stuff to try and connect Evan Thomas and David John REES to the family - or not!

Looking at news paper references, it seem that many towns and villages had an "American Stores".

Just in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire papers in 1900- 1909, there are mentions of American Stores in Abercynon, Abergwynfi, Bargoed, Blaengarw, Crumlin, Dowlais, Mountain Ash, Pontardulais, and Trealaw,

It seems likely that Edward's son Jonathan Marsden Rees had the "American Stores" franchise in Bedlinog, We do know that he was a grocer there at the time of Edward's death. It's possible that the registrar has recorded either JM or DW as DM in error.
