I did thanks Col. I was always told that both of my great aunts died and that Gertie was the only survivor. Clearly Beatrice did but I imagine, for both her and my gran, the loss of both parents within a year, being separated and the drop in lifestyle was pretty unpleasant; even in the context of today’s values.

2 Melville Terrace is the only property listed for that street, in 1895.  Will get back to you if enquiries turn up anything.

OK, here we are....(info courtesy of Corstorphine Trust).

From Rena Cowper's research notes and other archive material...MELVILLE TERRACE - Now 7 and 9 Ladywell Avenue, formerly Broomhouse Road, south of Claycott Dairy.

Origin of name not known: a little further south the ground forming the comer with Dovecot Road was Melvillehaugh (previously Melville Hall) (no38) (1871 census).

Melville Villa (presumable one of the houses in Melville Terrace had Miss Harthill (1881 census) Medical Galvanist, and a Robert Rintoul 1894/5 Directory.

Couldn't resist a look at this one. It is Beatrice Anne Strath or Williams, widow, daughter of James Christie Strath and Elizabeth Beatrice Strath, maiden surname Stewart, both deceased, to John Parker, electrician's labourer etc etc.

PM me with your e-mail address if you want a copy of the document.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The 1911 census index shows Elizabeth Beatrice Strath, 50; Isobel Margaret Strath, 15; and Gertrude Strath, 11 in the same household in Edinburgh St George and Beatrice A C Strath, 17, in a different household in Edinburgh St Andrew.

Elizabeth Beatrice Strath, other surnames Smith and Stewart, died in Edinburgh St George in 1911 aged 50.

Isobel Strath, aged 19, died in Lasswade in 1914. This may or may not be your Isobel Margaret Strath. Her death certificate would clarify that.

Gertrude Strath or Scott or Cameron died in Elgin in 1987, aged 87. She married Arthur Scott in Kirkmichael, Banffshire in 1918 and Douglas William Cameron in Auldearn in 1931.

Deaths in Elgin with mother's maiden surname Strath
Douglas William Cameron in 2011, aged 79. Probably the Douglas William Cameron born in Drainie in 1932
Jean Fraser Scott or Cameron or Campbell in 2001 aged 67. Probably the Jean Fraser Cameron born in Drainie in 1933.
Frances Jessie Scott or Cameron or Campbell in 2018 aged 82. Probably the Frances Jessie Cameron born in Drainie in 1935
John Alexander Scott or Cameron in 2015, aged 77. Probably the John Alexander Cameron born in Drainie in 1937.

Search on Google Maps for 7 Ladywell Avenue, Edinburgh, to see the house.

Apologies for the slow reply but I’m overseas at the moment with really poor signal. I’ll reply in full next week when I’m back. Max
