GRO registrar re-registration codes
« on: Friday 07 August 20 10:42 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I did a few years ago know the answer to this but can anyone re-confirm for me...
On occasional birth registration there have been additional codes added to original entry...
Would anyone know what the following mean for each specific code.
D' or S' or J' ......for example 5C S'54 or sometimes you see 5C 54a with an additional " a " at the end.
Hope this is not too confusing.
Payne, Woodchester Glos / Kings Norton Worcs.
Luker, Glos.
Bingham; Stroud, Glos.
Gore: Glos/ Plymouth.
Rodway: Woodchester, Glos. Wanted Henry Rodway born 1849. Missing since 1881.
Hyam: Glos.
Morgan: Nettleton Wilts / Stroud Glos.
Elliott : Malmesbury Wilts.
Searching for Thomas Elliott, Occ  groom / butler born 1830. Father Alexander occ: carpenter, place births unknown.
Please..descendants of Howard Sidney Davies, Cinderford or Stanley Howard Davies, Croydon, Surrey.

If I am reading your query correctly you are talking about where an amendment has been done to the original registration
5C S'54  - S54 would mean amended September qtr '54

This often applies when a couple marry after having had children together and the births registration details are added to.

Hi Rosie99,
Thank you much for reading my query correctly, yes this is what I am looking for, but years ago I seem to remember being told there was a meaning for each code.
J'...D'...S' and lastly a. One was definitely marriage but not sure on the others or which one was which.
Thank you again.

Pauline is right, the 'codes' are the months unless you can give an example of something that does not match those initials.  The 'a' also generally just indicates a possible adjustment

Just thinking on the marriage adjustment I have seen online images of marriages where adjustments have been done to the original certificate and initialled.  I would imagine that this information would then be passed to the GRO from the register office/church and the same would apply to the GRO index.

Thank you everyone,
I really must have got a little confused then, as I am sure years ago, when collecting a certificate from my local register office a kind gentleman explained this to me. But it was back in the day when the indexes weren't searchable online and you visited the Family Records Centre.
So if these are amendments to the original registration in the quarter that they were amended in, what if the amendment took place more than a year from the original registration ? Going into another registration year ?
Sorry to ask .....
