HMS Karanja
« on: Saturday 08 August 20 00:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am helping a friend to find any information on her uncle Albert John Dixon who served on the HMS Karanja during WW2. He was with the 29th J.B.Welsh Fusiliers during the invasion of Madagascar in May 1942.
Albert John Dixon was born on 16 December 1910 in Pontllanfraith, Monmouthshire, Wales and died in Kent in 1976 aged 65 years. Would there be any further information out there about his time spent with the 29 Brigade during WW2.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Pauline

KARANJA was a merchant ship, converted as an LSI(L) Landing Ship Infantry (Large) built in 1930. Formerly owned by the  British India Steam Navigation co.
9890 tons. She could carry 1500 troops. She was lost off Bougie (North Africa) by air attack 11/12/1942
You can download her WW2 movement card for free after registering from the National Archive.

As your friends uncle was with the Welsh Fusiliers during the invasion of Madagascar in May 1942.
He was probably being transported by KARANJA.

Thanks to rootschatter Max D.

This book should be useful. Bit pricey though. Perhaps your local library may be able to help.

Thank you seaweed for all this useful information.

My friend has a poem written by the young soldiers of the J.B.Welch Fusilier in May 1942 on their return voyage home to England. Very moving poem. In 1995 she wrote to the Historical Division, Welch Fusiliers in Lichfield, Staffordshire trying to find information but received no reply.

Thank you once again. I am sure she will be very pleased with all the information you have provided.

Includes a list of those on board rather than a list of those who died.
