william Henry Clapp 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards
« on: Saturday 08 August 20 14:57 BST (UK) »
Hello to all you kind souls,

I seek help finding the service records and/or medal records for William Henry Clapp.....I am drawing blanks and going around in circles, I barely qualify as novice.

William is listed on 1901 census married to Fanny Lavinia, 3 children.
He is listed as being in 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.

the family verbal history is that he served in Boer war and WW1. one of his sons has the name Belmont....a boer war battle and a medal from this was handed down along with WW1 medals.

the family seek to find what he was actually awarded, where served....any military history.

many thanks .

3074 Pte WH Clapp served with 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the Boer War.

Medal record (from Ancestry) is here:
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01pt3/

There are other related records, do you have Findmypast his service record 1891-1903 is there? (it may be on Ancestry)

I don't see any Great War record.

Forces War Records should always be cross checked.  The ones linked to are 203690 was born 1894 when the Grenadier was already serving.   203520 died in action August 1918 his widow was Florence so not our man either.
The sailor was born 1895 so not him either.  There are no Grenadier Guardsmen in their WW1 lists

FWR have the same Boer War medal records for WH Clapp Grenadier in the Boer War.  These can at present be downloaded free from the National Archives I should have said that at the beginning

Yes two of them are the same as on the first page!  Taffy might like to take out a sub to FWR but I shall be surprised it if results in anything and a look at the collection list will be worth doing:
