Here in Scotland the rules on meeting people indoors are as follows - Phase 3 -

Meet up with a maximum of 2 Households Indoors and in small numbers (no more than 8 in total) observing the 2 metre distancing rule.

My grandson will be 18 next week so it is going to be impossible to have even a small family celebration indoors if we follow the guidelines. Outdoors in their garden could be a possibility but knowing the Scottish weather we are not holding our breath on that happening.

Dowdstree, if I am correctly understanding you that would permit three households (those who dwell there plus two others) to meet in doors provided  a six foot eight inch gap (I know - I will go metric one of these days) is left. To have eight people and leave such a gap would imply rather a large room! Also surely the gap is only guidance and has no basis in law? My experience of being out and about is that the 6' 8" guidance is pretty much ignored.

sonofthom  I quoted exactly from the Scottish Government Phase 3 Guidelines.

It does not make it clear exactly how this should work. Confusing isn't it???

The Social Distancing gap as recommended would not work in most homes therefore you would have to invite fewer people to meet up with you indoors.

Don't worry about going metric I am still having to ask my husband to "translate" it for me.

I met up with a group of 6 friends the other day in one of their gardens.  The chairs were a metre apart - measured exactly with a metre stick.  In actual fact there were 7 of us, as a husband and wife came (and dog) but they counted that as 1.   I went to my g.granddaughter's 2nd birthday a couple of weeks ago and there were 14 of us from varying households.  My grandson and his wife and the birthday girl, his brother, his mother and stepfather and both sets of grandparents.  Her parents, her grandmother and her sister and partner.  Plus 3 small children not counting the birthday girl.  I think they decided because her parents, sister (and family) and her grandmother all live very close to each other and are in and out of each others houses all the time, they would count that as one group, our grandson's mother, stepfather and brother as another group as they visit frequently too, and my OH and I and his other grandparents as 2 other groups.  Anyway, we all sat in the garden, well spaced out and had a lovely time.  No-one has become ill since.  All that happened was that my grandson's partner, who was 40 weeks plus 5 days pregnant went into labour after we'd all gone home and had a son at 11.25pm.  She really didn't want her children to share a birthday, but the baby arrived 35 minutes too early to have his own birthday.

Congratulations on the birth of your new great grandson. Does he have a name yet?

It is lovely to hear some exciting news for a change.

Hope all are well.

dowdstree - yes he's called Finley Thomas Nigel.  Thomas is his dad's name, no idea where Nigel comes from.  His older sister Emily Jane Elizabeth (Elizabeth after me!) absolutely adores him.  I've some great photos of the two of them, unfortunately, although they're up on Facebook, I can't put them up on here - at least I don't think so.

Congratulations, he will be spoilt by his older sister, my granddaughter thought her baby brother was hers, if my daughter had to tell him off Hannah would remind my daughter he was only a baby and would get upset on his behalf, they are rising 21 and 18 and they get on extremely well, hardly ever fall out big time, she is very caring, well they both are caring towards each other

Nice names

I think that is why so many people don't stick to the rules, they don’t intentionally break them, they just don’t know what they are!

Two separate households are allowed to mix indoors or in the garden of a home. This means you can have people in your garden, as long as they are from just one other household at a time. This could be awkward if you have several adult children with families!
