For a male age 32 on the 1851 Glasgow Census.  This is from the transcription on Ancestry.

You need to view the actual image - sounds like a mistranscription

Just off the top of my head, ( ) could it be an incorrect transcription for shawl merchant? Paisley shawls for instance.

Is your query re Thomas Martin(e) (born Renfrewshire) & his wife Helen. If so he was a SHAWL merchant and Helen a school mistress.

Shan in Glasgow was bakery goods which were past their sell-by date, only there was no sell-by dates then! 
 There were "Shan Shops" which dealt in old bread, scones & french cakes etc' so presumably shan merchants also!

Probably from Gaelic sean = old.
