You need to view the actual image - sounds like a mistranscription

Just off the top of my head, ( ;)) could it be an incorrect transcription for shawl merchant? Paisley shawls for instance.
I agree with Carole.

Thanks for your replies.  I am not sure if this is my ancestor, same name and age, will do more searching before ordering the actual image.

There are only four results from a search on Ancestry of the 1851 Glasgow Census of an occupation
Sha* Merchant, age 32.
Andrew Levey , 32, Occupation:   Shawl Merchant
William Ritchie, 33, Occupation:   Merchant (shawls )
William Hutton, 29, Occupation:   Shawl & Ailane Merchant
William Henderson, 36, Occupation:   Merchant Shawls & Prints

There is no Shanl Merchant

Is your query re Thomas Martin(e) (born Renfrewshire) & his wife Helen. If so he was a SHAWL merchant and Helen a school mistress.

Shan in Glasgow was bakery goods which were past their sell-by date, only there was no sell-by dates then!  ;D
There were "Shan Shops" which dealt in old bread, scones & french cakes etc' so presumably shan merchants also!

Probably from Gaelic sean = old.

Skoosh.

My query was for Robert Scott, age 32, living with his mother and siblings.  I was looking for a Robert Scott with an unusual occupation.
