19th century child mill workers in Halifax
« on: Tuesday 11 August 20 10:53 BST (UK) »
I am trying to document children who were brought to work in the Halifax mills around 1880.

There were several orphanages/properties where the children were housed, many near the mills owned by the Calvert family in the Warley and Wainstalls area.

The current list of names can be found at

http://calderdalecompanion.co.uk/mmc126.html

My question here is regarding names that I cannot read on the 1881 census for a place called Spring Mill in Warley, Halifax.

1) the 1st name: Elizabeth Dowas

2) the 3rd name: Mary Molly ?unclear?

Both girls came from Liverpool.

Can anyone read or (even better) recognise the names?

Even better still would be to hear from anyone whose family tree includes these names

Best wishes and thanks in advance.

You could look for a birth in Liverpool for the name Mary Mollyneaux which Jebber has suggested and see if one matches up.

She should appear in 1871 census as should Elizabeth if we can ascertain her surname.

It's been transcribed as Elizabeth Owens born Welshpool Wales.

There are several possible births in Liverpool, the only difference is they have only one L, I suspect the census is a spelling error.

My first thought for Elizabeth was Downs.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I agree, Jebber, the name is usually spelled Molyneaux with a single L and I would doubt that the census-takers of 1881 would be familiar with the name.

Minus A in the family name of Earls of Sefton, the best-known holders of the surname. Not the easiest of names to spell.
