Identification of uniform?
« on: Tuesday 11 August 20 11:19 BST (UK) »
Could anyone please help with this? This is a relative that I know was based in Gibraltar in the late 1800s but I can't find anything about his service record since I have so little information on him.

His name was John Jebb Bingham and his birth/death details are believed to be: BIRTH 14 JUN 1838 • St Mary's Nottingham,  DEATH 25 JAN 1931. I know in 1871 he is listed as a Chelsea Pensioner with his wife Elizabeth, though.

Does anyone recognise his unit from the uniform?

Thanks, Steve

It could be the Royal Regiment of Artillery, FindMyPast has a John Binhgam from Nottingham serving as a gunner have joined aged 17 on 5 Jun 1851. He served 9 and a half years abroad in India and Gibraltar. He was discharged unfit for further service.

I think he is very probably Gunner John Bingham, 27672, Royal Artillery.

His army file is on FindMyPast: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO97%2F2305%2F058%2F001&parentid=GBM%2FWO97%2F2305%2F201751

Also on Fold 3 but I don't have a sub for that.

Thanks so much both. I can't access FindMyPast (no sub), but the Royal Regiment of Artillery is looking promising. There is a picture here of some men and the officer/NCO in the middle seems to have the same insignia on his right arm.

See: siege train NCOs image.

I think it is your man, his army record says he was born in St. Mary's, Nottingham. He was discharged on 19 Oct 1869 due to a rupture on his left side caused by his having lifted something heavy, I can not make out most of it. His intended residence was 27 Wilford/Milford Grove, Nottingham.

I'm glad you revised the date to 1869 as this is definitely an 1860's
photo.
A full length image with a posing stand at the back of him, typical of the 60's
He appears to have 1 GC chevron so if you can access his file & find out when he received it
that will be the earliest date.

GC chevron? Is that for Good Conduct? And are you referring to the arrow like marking above the symbol on the right arm?

I'll try to get hold of those army records.

Thank you so much everyone.
