Occold Parish Birth Record Request
« on: Wednesday 12 August 20 18:51 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help with a look up for a birth record in Occold please?
Abednego Mayhew born 1792 Mother possibly Zinnis.
Also any other Mayhews in Occold possibly a Phinneas ?
(I have found an entry in the IGI  listed as Sudbury. I understand that the IGI entries were from Bishops Transcripts which just listed Sudbury as the Dioceses rather than individual
parishes )
Thank you

Thank you. I have already seen that but the census returns show his place of birth as Occold and I know that it's quite a way from Sudbury. I was hoping someone might have access to the original Occold Parish registers as I have read the IGI entries are Bishops Transcripts which lump about 200 parishes under "Sudbury"

Hi Kaymay,

According to the transcripts from the Suffolk FHS, his bapt. is recorded as;

30-12-1792 Abednego Mayhew s/o Finis in Occold St.Michael.  bb/poor

I could not seen any other baptism involving Finis Mayhew in the deanery of Hartismere (which includes Occold).

Thank you very much for that Alan. It does confirm it was Occold. Very good of you to check, one last query what does  the bb stand for? Is it base born? I  am still wondering if Finis is the father or mother ?

Hi Kaymay,

Yes - you are right. BB = base born.
One of several terms used over the generations to describe what today is called illegitimate. Others could be ; Base, Bastard, Natural (s/o or d/o) etc.

The entry clearly has Finis as the mother.

More baptisms at Occold from the Suffolk FHS:

1802 James base-born son of Phineas MAYHEW baptized 25 July
1806 James base-born son of Phincas MAYHEW born 20 February; baptized 9 March
1806 Mary Ann base-born daughter of Phincas MAYHEW received into the church 16 October

And a couple of burials:

1806 March 16 at Occold: James base-born son of Phineas MAYHEW
1872 April 3 at Hoxne: Abednego MAYHEW of Stradbroke Union House aged 82

Presumably, Phineas was their mother (even when transcribed as Phincas) and Stradbroke Union House was the Hoxne Union workhouse at Barley Green, near Stradbroke.

Thank you very much David for that information. (I did have Abednego 's death in Stradbroke as I traced him in 1861 and 1871 census and also think he may have used the name Ben in 1841 and 1851) I am descended from his son William.
I thought there was a James but didn't realise there were 2 and assume that both of them didn't survive.
I didn't know about Mary Ann so will look at that.   Very strange forename and no fathers. I think I have hit another brick wall :D

Thank you again, really appreciate your time.
