ID Place name PLEASE
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 09:40 BST (UK) »
Hi All
Attached is the marriage cert, and a blow up of the place name, for Eliza Jones and James Hopkins. The marriage took place in Geelong in 1854.  Eliza states her birth place to be ??????, Stratford, I think.  In the 1841 census she is living at Bletchley, Bucks with a John & Ann Palmer, all three are indicated as not being born in Bucks.  In 1851 I can't find which Eliza/Elizabeth/Rebecca (any combination as she used them all during her life) Jones is which.  There are no obvious ones stand out.  In 1851 John & Ann Palmer are still living in Bletchley this time with a 73 year old William Jones.  John Palmer comes from Lincoln and Ann Palmer and William Jones from Shropshire.  Makes me think that maybe Will is Ann's father and that Eliza Jones is her niece.  Anyway then she migrated to OZ in 1854.
Sorry to be long winded but I like to give context to my requests, which is, in case you have forgotten, the name of Eliza's birthplace :)
Cheers
Bob

I suspect not, as the bottom says "according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Scotland"

I'm wondering how you know that that Eliza Jones is the one who emigrated in 1854 as I see that in the 1861, John and Ann have a niece, Eliza, with them.  She is of the same age as the 1841 Eliza but is a Widow.

I agree Fenny Stratford
... written as Fainey.

Church of Scotland is for her marriage not her baptism.

For the groom, England is specified. For the bride, England is not specified so it must be a town in the state of Victoria. There is a Stratford In Victoria.

Agreed, but as the groom is noted as "Bath, Eng", I just thought it would be less likely that the bride would be that specific about a distant small village without adding England, and may have links with a location closer to where the ceremony took place. Just offering another avenue for investigation.

Thank you all for contributing to my conundrum and giving me food for thought.  I will now re-visit some of my assumptions.
If Fenny Stratford is/was indeeda place in Bletchley then that could be it.
The girl who migrated, and landed at Geelong in 1853, was Eliza E Jones from Buckingham a servant. When one of her son's died his mother was named as Eliza Rebecca and when one of the daughters died she was named as Eliza Elizabeth.  And when she died in 1886 she was named as Elizabeth Hopkins.
In those days in colonial Victoria 'Church of Scotland' was used sometimes to denote the Presbyterian church.
Anyway, as I said before, I'm going to go back on my research and see what I can find.  However I will keep Fenny Stratford in mind.
Cheers & Stay Safe
