Oak Lodge, Aldenham or Stanmore
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 17:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a photocopy of a letter (Bucks Records Office) to my 4x Great grandfather Pythagoras Quarry. It has been sent to him from Bethlem Hospital regarding his daughter Elizabeth, discharging her as "uncured". This is in 1829.

It has been sent to him c/o Mr I  or J Eales (?), Oak Lodge, Stanmore.

I cannot find anything about an Oak Lodge in Stanmore, although there is an Oak Lodge on the 1841 Census, in the Caldicot Hill area of Aldenham ( where some of my Quarry ancestors lived at the time). Was Stanmore  the local "postal" town? Or had the hospital got it incorrect?

If this is the correct one, where would I find out where exactly Oak Lodge was? I know there were  several "gentry" houses in the area and a number of "lodges"

Thanks in advance.

(This is to fill in Pythagoras's missing years between 1811 -  baptism of youngest son George -  and  aged 60 , as Male Servant to Charlotte Chauvel, on 1841 census at Caldicot Hill.)

Googling "Isaac Eeles" "Oak Lodge" brings up some other pointers:

Oak Lodge, Bushey https://tinyurl.com/y474kboa

and Oak Lodge near Watford https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/20097/page/1248/data.pdf

I think it must be Oak Lodge Aldenham
Various in newspaper
1824 and 1827 Mr Eeles Esq  Oak Lodge Aldenham
1868
death of Elizabeth relict of Isaac Eeles Esq formerly of Oak Lodge,Herts.
On the 1841 Census there is an Oak Lodge Aldenham (not Eeles Family) ,Previous entry Caldicot Hill  so a possible connection with Pythagoras?

Cathy
Also 1842 Isaac Eeles formerly of Oak Lodge near Watford Herts!

Thank you everyone - looks like its one and the same place. I am thinking that this was where Pythagoras was employed.

Yes I have Pythagoras on the 1841 census - was looking at it again earlier, and got sidetracked by researching about the lady who appears to be the head of the household. ..Charlotte Chauvel   (widow of a James S Chauvel, retired Major East India Co. She later remarried to Thomas Reader White, who became Rector of St Marys Finchley)  That 1841 address  entry would appear to be Berkeley Lodge/Cottage.

Back to checking out some old maps etc.

Thanks again

I have been searching through later censuses, by address, to locate both Oak Lodge and Berkeley Cottage
.... and have found that Berkeley Cottage was just off the Elstree Road close to Caldicote House.
And...….  according to the 1871 census for Aldenham, there a Oak Lodge next to Hillfield House. Searching an old map there were three lodges  round Hillfield House, so I know have a clearer idea of the geographical location.

Thanks to all for your help.
