McLean family of Dumfries
« on: Friday 14 August 20 09:37 BST (UK) »
Hi
Just joined group and looking for help finding my wife's gggrandparents. Samuel Alexander McLean was born around 1860 in "Dumfrieshire". His father was Hugh John Frederick McLean. This from the 1901 census in England.
We've been looking for several years but can't find anything.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Martyn

Thanks very much for the speedy response. It appears however that you've managed to get as far as we've been able to.
We just can't find any other facts, Hugh John Frederick had a fairly distinctive name so it's even stranger. He was stated as a Chemist on Samuels wedding cert but perhaps that's wrong.
I know you hit brickwalls but even if we could establish how we've hit that wall it'd help.

We're 200 hundred miles south of Dumfries and have no knowledge of the area.

Anyway thanks again, regards.

Hi Martyn

Welcome from me too  :)

Was Samuel in the army?  www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5CH-23F  There may be further details on this that could help such as next of kin etc. Regiment 8 Hussars.

Possible for soldier Sam in 1881 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27W-NCCV

Hi Monica
Thanks for the pointers, we've checked those leads already and it looks like it is Samuel.
The problem is that his parents, Hugh and Annie, along with his brothers James and John don't appear anywhere else. Tracing them is the key to going further back.
It looks like he left Dumfries sometime before he enlisted in Warrington which is next town to where he married and settled down in Widnes around 1892.
Thanks for your help, not sure where to go now!
Regards
Martyn

What details are there on his enlistment papers that could help with searches around 1881? Was there a next of kin mentioned? Was the date of his enlistment pre the census date on 3 April (we likely have him as already a soldier on that 1881 census entry)? What address did he give when he enlisted?

Mother Annie and brothers James and John are mentioned where? On his enlistment papers?

More questions from us than answers at the moment ;)

Hi
On his enlistment papers there is no actual address given other than his birthplace saying Dumfries.
His next of kin states Hugh and Annie as mother and father at the time of enlistment.  As he extended his contract the next of kin changed to firstly James and finally his other brother John along with a Liverpool address.
Ive tried sending you a copy but even a page is too big to send, I could send you an email if it would help?
Appreciate your help!
