Lookup Request - Lewingdon from Warpsgrove
« on: Friday 14 August 20 11:08 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am looking for information on the Lewingdon family from Warpsgrove (later Chalgrove) in Oxfordshire.

Henry Lewingdon (born about 1720?) married Mary ? about 1745. He died 1783.

Their children were Mary Lewingdon (born about 1745)
Henry Lewingdon
Frances Lewingdon (married Thomas Sadler in 1785 in Chalgrove).
And an illegitimate daughter called Sarah who married Joseph Fuller (Abt. 1770).

There is also a Francis Lewingdon from Great Haseley who appears related but I haven’t worked out how exactly.

I’d love to find details on Henry’s marriage to Mary and what her maiden name might be.
I’d also like to find details of the births of the children.  Any help would be much appreciated.

There is this one in Swallowfield, Berkshire 1747 to Mary Dee
You might think it too far away.

And if this baptism is same couple it might rule them out.

Thanks. It does seem a little unlikely.

Hi

Not sure if you have this or if it's relevant:

In the parish of Watlington on 19th October 1724, Francis Lewingdon of Golder in the parish of Pyrton married Mary Hynde of Cuxham.

Golder seems to be a farm close to Warpsgrove.

I searched the Oxfordshire parish records for Henry Lewingdon and found a burial in Pyrton on 16th February 1715 for a Henry Lewingdon of Golder.

I presume you've seen the wills for both:
Henry d. 1783
and his son Henry d. 1825

Thank you decor,

I'm sure that the Goldar reference is relevant as previous research has mentioned the place.

I had not seen the burial record for Henry in 1715.  That was very helpful.

I have seen and transcribed the wills for the Henry's of 1783 and 1825.  A fun fact, Henry Lewingdon senior threatened to disinherit one of his daughter's if she married the man he disapproved of.
