L.S. Colvin - Georgia
« on: Friday 14 August 20 22:34 BST (UK) »
Seeking information about L.S. Colvin or Colven, who married Kate Robinson in 1893 in Georgia, and then disappeared from existence by 1898.  The marriage is recorded, but by 1898, Kate Robsinson had married someone else.  Trying to find out what happened to him - death, left her - that freed her to re-marry.  No children apparently of the marriage.

What name did she remarry under?

 - here's the image.  I'm not convinced the name is Colvin - I think it's Cohen - look at the way the h in "Charlton" is written.

Jorose,  I agree with you, it looks like "Cohen".  If so, I've found the following:

Atlanta Constitution
24 Dec 1899

Shooting Scrape at Fort Gaines

Fort Gaines, GA:  Dec. 23 (special)  At about 11 o'clock last night a difficulty occurred beween J S & J C Sutton (brothers) & L S Cohen in which Cohen was shot in the left breast with a 32-caliber pistol and his condition is critical.

So how did Kate remarry in 1898 if Cohen was only shot/died late 1899?

I think he survived the gunshot and they must have divorced prior to the "difficulty" involving the Sutton brothers.  I'm trying to trace a L S Cohen who lived in Fort Gaines, possibly owning part of a drugstore and maybe investing in a bank.

We haven't received any information on "Kate's" vitals, but there is a Kate/Catherine Robinson living in the household of Noah and Harriet Robinson in Charlton county, GA in 1880 and 1900.  She is listed as a widow with a 1 month old son, Clifford Edgar Price.  Clifford's father appears to be Samuel Edgar Price and in the 1910 census, Kate appears to have married 3rd, Duncan H Rhoden and they are living in Baker county, FL.

I just found a Lewis Cohen living in Fort Gaines in 1880 with his mother and siblings:  Sarrah, mother, Bell, Lewis, Teresa, Carrie Mike, and Jacob Coughman (Kaufman?), Sarah's father. The interesting part is, the Sutton bros. are enumerated right after the Cohen family.

1900 census, there is a Louis S Cohen who is an "inmate" in the St. Joseph Infirmary in Savannah, GA on June 1, 1900.  He is listed as single, was born Sep 1971 and his occupation is a Trade Salesman. His parents are listed as having been born in Georgia. Also, on June 2nd 1900 there is a Louis Cohen who is living in the household of Morris and Belle (Louis' sister who states she was born in Fort Gaines) Seligman in Columbus, GA.  This Louis states he is single, a salesman, b. Sep 1871 in GA and parents b. Prussia and Bavaria, which matches the Louis of 1880. Are these 2 listings for the same person?

Blakely Early County News 4 Jan 1900 reports that the friends of L S Cohen were delighted that he was fast recovering.  It mentions that he was a travelling salesman for Messrs Kern & Loeb.

Columbus , Georgia , City Directory 1900

So at last we have his christian name.  Strange that the marriage and shooting report only referred to him by his initials
