You don't need to order it - you can view it on line at Scotlands People. If you aren't a member you will need to register.

You can search for free - but then you would need to purchase some units - minimum number 30 -- but you would only spend 6 units to view a certificate or a census.

Extract below from the Scotlands People site.

Website;
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You can search our indexes free of charge and use pay-per-view to view and download digital images of the records you find. The indexes cover birth, death and marriage registers, census returns, church registers, valuation rolls and legal records (like wills and testaments and coats of arms).

Credits cost £0.25 each and are available in batches of 30 (£7.50) or 40 (£10) from the buy credits page.

The number of credits and costs of digital images for the different record types are as follows:

    Statutory registers of births (older than 100 years), marriages (older than 75 years) and deaths (older than 50 years) cost 6 credits (£1.50)

-----------------
It would be worth joining for you - seeing the certificates on line (and you will be able to view James' parents marriage) -- is SO much cheaper than English certificates - and so handy!

I did indeed save that document, and John Turner and Anne Cunningham married in 1870! Johns father was also called James so maybe John named his son after his father?

That's brilliant - so now you have thir parents' names!

There was a traditional Scottish naming pattern (not cast in stone of course!) - the tradition was;

The pattern generally went as follows:

    The first son was named after the father's father.
    The second son after the mother's father.
    The third son after the father.
    The first daughter after the mother's mother.
    The second daughter after the father's mother.
    The third daughter after the mother.
