Could anyone find Ellen Dawson born abt.1863 in Bolton to James and Mary Dawson. She appears on the 1871 census in Bolton Union Workhouse with her Mother Mary [ nee Martin ] but I don't know where they went after.

Was Mary Dawson recorded as age 31, widowed, born Prescot?
Mary may have remarried and Ellen might have been under step-father's surname on 1881 census.
Was this the family on 1861 census?
Little Bolton All Saints'. Parish Little Bolton. Residence Lodge St.
James Dawson head 28 b. Wigan
Mary Dawson   wife  25 b. Prescot
Wiliam             son    3  b. Bolton
Thomas             ''      2  b. Bolton
Ellen                dau.   0  b. Bolton

Baby Ellen matches with Ellen who died, aged 18 months, at Lodge St. and was buried in Tonge Cemetery, April 1862 .
Did William and Thomas survive childhood? Where were they in 1871 & 1881?

Thanks for your replies. Yes, William and Thomas survived, they lived with their Grandparents the Houghtons. There were two children called Ellen, I know the first one died but couldn't find if the one in 1863 survived.
The Father and husband of Mary left for the USA about 1870 and further children of Mary's were not his. If Ellen did survive then that could give me another line to the tree.

Remarks column for Mary "Pregnant & destitute".
In actual & legal fact Mary was an abandoned or separated wife, not a "Singlewoman" or widow as the later workhouse records stated.
Was James Dawson the father of baby James? Were there more children between Ellen (1863) and James or after James?
Have you found anything for Mary after 1871?

Baptisms may have been at St. Mary of the Assumption, Little Bolton. Founded 1840s. Baptism and marriage registers at Lancashire Archives.
Other Catholic churches in Bolton when the Dawson children were born were SS Peter & Paul (founded 1794), St. Patrick (1860) and St. Edmund (1861). SS Peter & Paul had a graveyard. Registers for all are at Lancashire Archives.
Some register transcripts of SS Peter & Paul are on LANOPC; baptisms 1794-1855, marriages 1795-1917, deaths 1836-1865 & 1874-1880.
All Saints' C. of E. where James and Mary married was in Little Bolton district. They were in the parish of Little Bolton for 1861 census.

Thanks for looking and the information. I don't know if Mary Dawson had more children or what happened to her. There were no more by James Dawson her husband who had other children around 1871 in the USA, I have tracked him down.
I have a Mary Jones on the 1881 census in Yorkshire. Her husband is John Jones but there is a child James Dawson age 11 born in Bolton. I wonder if it's her but can't find the marriage between Mary Dawson nee Martin and John Jones. Maybe they married in Yorkshire. There are other Jones children too. RG11/4575

Yes, I thought that James had died in the workhouse, maybe it's a totally different family in 1881 in Yorkshire. A red herring!
