Birth Registration
« on: Saturday 15 August 20 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Is there a way to search for a birth registration just by a mother's maiden name? My gg grandmother Emily Elizabeth Savill was born in Bethnal Green 1870. Her mother was Susannah Cakebread. She was baptised with the name Savill, but John Savill wasn't her real father and there is no registration under his name. John took her on as his own daughter. I cannot find a registration under Emily Cakebread or Savill and I am guessing she may have been registered under her real father's name if at all. Is there a way to search with just a maiden name or go through the registers through that period and place she was said to have been born? I have tried findmypast with a search for Emily and maiden Cakebread but no results.

Any help would be gratefully received.

MJ

Maybe Susannah was a widow so Cakebread was not her maiden name but a married one?

Is this the marriage?

1870 March quarter Bethnal Green
Susannah Cakebread and John Savill are on the same page.

When was Emily Elizabeth born/baptised?

I think Cakebread was her maiden name, two possible births:-

CAKEBREAD, SUSANNA       LIST
GRO Reference: 1844  S Quarter in EPPING UNION  Volume 12  Page 92

CAKEBREAD, SUSANNA       REED
GRO Reference: 1844  S Quarter in EPPING UNION  Volume 12  Page 92

The 1871 has her place of birth as Harlow, Essex which is covered by Epping.  I wonder which Susanna married John?  Interesting that there are two registrations and the only difference is the mother's maiden name.

Thank you, but I know the Cakebread line. It’s List for her mother. I really am just trying to find the real father to Emily. Is there a way to look through birth registers via mother’s maiden name only? The GRO only allows you to search with a name for the child, but the only way to find the registration is to go through the book myself at the GRO, but that’s not possible haha!

I have tried findmypast with a search for Emily and maiden Cakebread but no results.
That is probably the only site where you can do this. Maybe Emily was baptised but not registered? Compulsory registration was introduced in 1875.

There is always the possibility that her birth was never registered.  It was not compulsory until 1874 if I remember correctly.

A baptism does not guarantee a birth registration.

You need to register but it is free.
You need a surname though.
So you would need to just go through. I have had a quick look and there aren’t that many Emily Elizabeths for June quarter, Middlesex. She doesn’t seem to be the one in Bethnal Green.
