You may find that in 1939 he is already a married man (possibly estranged?). This does need more digging.

Look back at 1939 for marital status of both Fred and Edna.

1939 register has Fred as Married and Edna as single. Living in the same property. Am even more confused now. Help!

Yes it is very confusing. My best guess so far is that they were cohabiting as though married, she using his surname, and managed to get even themselves in a muddle. But, as I say, more digging is required.

I suggest the 1940 marriage certificate will be key to reaching any firm conclusions.

Edna worked in mental health so may well not have been local to Brentford but gone there for work. Electoral rolls suggest that as Edna May Piggott she was living and working at Hanwell Asylum/Mental Hospital in the 1930s.

Here she is in the 1948 Nursing Register (under “Mental Nurses”):

Edna May Pearse (née Piggott), 11 Cavendish Ave, West Ealing, London W13.

Registered: 24 Mar 1948. Qualification: RMPA Cert. 1936

It looks as though Edna was a daughter of Joseph Henry Piggott and Harriett Jane née Piper. Joseph’s WW1 military record says that Edna was born in Moorthorpe and baptised in South Kirkby (Wakefield area).

Birth reg: Edna May Piggott, mother’s maiden name Piper, Mar qtr 1914 Hemsworth 9c 365.

Thank you very much for this. Brentford and Hanwell aren’t that far from each other so it makes sense.
