A bit of illustration ;D

For those who have ancestry (uk) a link to the 1899 Wandsworth exam (if it works!)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ptw/

Creed register for the Workhouse, multiple admissions of Phoebe, down near the bottom with her child born there being the last entry. Yes, son leaves with mum on the 20 May.

Not so easy to find who, if anyone, might have been admitted with her (no A+D)

Register of Births, including Phoebe's son (John) on 6 May 1899

Are we sure that it is Phoebe's sister who died a week after the birth of the child?
Phoebe goes to live with elder sister 6 years ago
Phoebe has child 5 born years ago, then Phoebe's mother dies a week after that, then her child dies aged 3 weeks? :-\

In which case might this be her death?

Thanks, Mckha, that looks right.  Perhaps happening a year or two earlier than would have been desirable for my alternative interpretation of the examination!

Diana's age varies a bit in the records (as does Phoebe's!)

Phoebes parents were Samuel Hughes (born 17th January 1827) and Diana Hughes, I have some information on them and the census returns - but no earlier information e.g. their parents.

Samuel Thomas Hughes, 33, and Diana Hughes, 26, married in Sheerness, 26 December 1859. Image available elsewhere.

Diana's father given as John, in the census she usually says she was born in Brighton.
There is a baptism at St Nicholas back in 1830
10 October

parents John + Ann Hughes
abode Under the Wall near Ireland's Gardens
father a Traveller

Thanks for all this information, I will have a good look through.

It was some years ago that I went to the National Archives to retrieve all the information regarding the workhouse records (there was not so much information on-line back then) but it was an enlightening moment when I found her name among the archives and all the additional information - so it was well worth the trip at the time.  :)

Sadly, all my copies and family history research is in boxes in remote storage at the moment, as I put my research on hold, but a recent contact although unrelated to Phoebe has sparked my interest once again!
