Can't find where they're buried
« on: Monday 17 August 20 00:14 BST (UK) »
I'm at a complete loss. I've been helping my mother look for information on her grandparents based in Waterford. We have the death cert of her grandmother but nothing on her grandfather. I'm finding it impossible to find out where they're buried. I've looked online through the information available from all cemeteries in Waterford for her grandmother as we have her date of death and there's nothing at all. My mother spent a few days there a few years ago and went to a few places but no one could give her any information. Somebody told her of a paper cutting but there was no mention of the burial place or funeral service.
I don't think they were religious, no   church records of baptism's or marriage, only civil details.
Any idea where we go from here.

If you can give us names and dates we could help you look, otherwise only thing I can think of is death notices in newspapers, you would need a subscription though. It's difficult to make suggestions without dates.

OK I'll try with the information I have so far. I'm also not 100% if the information on their wedding certificate is 100% true.  It seems she may have been 4-5 months pregnant when they got married, not sure if family approval was given, so it would make sense there may be some discrepancies but unfortunately makes things harder!  I have doubts if she even gave her proper name.

So the grandmother
: Mary Aspin nee  Hart , died - 01.01.1931 aged 46

Grandfather ; George Aspin no information

They had 5-6 children, most of whom I've seen their birth certs for online so I'm OK with them.
I think she was from waterford, and he was originally from Kilkenny. I always thought he had a second wife after Mary, but if what I've found online so far is correct then he married Mary as a widower, first wife was Anne Martin from.kilkenny. (Marriage and death certs online)

So it works out Mary would have been born around 1888. The only birth certs around that time I can find is two sisters Mary Ellen Hart 1886 and Elizabeth Hart 1888.  (Their father is William Hart, but according to Mary's marriage cert her father is William...)
Although both George's Marriage certs also have different names for his father.

The variants of their surnames Hart/Harte
Aspin/Aspen/Aspil/Aspel

I'll try looking for Georges birth cert now via Kilkenny as I'm not sure if I just looked through Waterford before.

George died 1963, it the same address as Mary in 1931 but he is married.

Death notice gives his wife as Ann nee Murray. Funeral to Mullinavat Co. Kilkenny.
English and American papers please copy.

Wow that's an amazing find . thank you.  I didn't search after the 1950s as I think my mam always thought he passed away in the 1940s.
See how his fathers forename  is also different on this wedding cert!!!
I can only find two graveyards listed in mullinavat, but no burial listed , I'm sure there's more graveyards though that probably aren't online,.so I'll try join a local group and see if there's more graveyards.
Many thanks for this.

I can see George seems to appear out of thin air in 1901
1901Census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kilkenny/Outrath/Bodalmore/1451473/

His father is John on his 1904 marriage to Anne Martin
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1905/10155/5695067.pdf
RootsIreland should have a transcript of the church record (Gowran)of this marriage but it is a subscription site, the church record may have more information.
https://rootsireland.ie/kilkenny/online-sources.php

On his marriage to Mary Hart in 1908 his father is given as George
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1908/10066/5661786.pdf

There are a few possibilities as to why the father's name changes for example.
A. George didn't know who his father was so just made up a name, not unusual.
B An error slipped in on the part of the priest or during the copying of the record.

It's also possible George's mother didn't marry until after his was born and he took on her husband's surname.
There is a marriage of a Margaret Lee and John Aspen in 1887 in Thomastown district but I can't see a George Lee birth is the general area at the time of George's birth.

It's worth searching using Asp?n to catch the Aspen records as well, the name Aspin/Aspen doesn't have many records so I wouldn't even bother with years or districts.

The surname Asper may also be worth a look.
There is a George Asper born in Waterford 1879 to Johanna Asper the father's name George ? is crossed out.

From the three different marriage certs, His father name is diffetent on each one. John, George and Frederick. His last marriage cert where georges name is "Astle" not Aspin, I've found a birth cert that corresponds with that. The father's name on the birth cert is Frederick Astle , and the birth year corresponds with the age on his death cert.
Seems like he was being shady about something throughout the years.

With the church records and any other records on subscription sites , ate you guaranteed to find information on people? I don't mind paying a subscription if I'm actually going to get somewhere with it, but I don't want to pay for one that only gives me the information that I've already retrieved on the geanealogy site.

I didn't know you had the third marriage.

No guarantees on the RootsIreland records I'm afraid, they do have a 24 hour sub for €15 but be warned they only have transcriptions, I didn't check if they have records for Mary's parish in Waterford.
