Looking for Elizabeth and Ellen Purkiss
« on: Monday 17 August 20 09:23 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth Purkiss was married in Milton on 30 Oct 1918 to Valentine Olford. She was a spinster 22 years old said her father was William Purkiss (dec'd) bricklayer. No occupation was given for Elizabeth but her address was Infectious diseases hospital, Milton. Valentine is a private in the RAMC and gives his address as 87 Gunner Street. Witnesses were Elsie May Styles and George White. I have found a likely Elsie, b Portsmouth in 1895, mmn Burder, living with family in 1901 and 1911, father policeman born Frampton Dorset. In the 1911 census the Styles family were living at 87 Gunner Street, so either Valentine lodged with them, or Elizabeth did and the addresses have got switched around.  George White impossible to trace.

The only Elizabeth I can find that fits in the right location is one registered Q2 1896  Portsea no mmn. (Elizabeth Matilda Purkiss eliminated as age out by a year and she is on 1911 with family. This 1896 birth would fit a baptism in Portsea on 18 June 1896 d/o Ellen, no father named, abode "Union". It is on a page of baptisms of unmarried mothers from Union, presumably workhouse.

But I cannot find Ellen Purkiss with young daughter Elizabeth in 1901 anywhere. Nor can I find a marriage in the area for an Ellen between 1896 and 1901, in case Elizabeth is listed with a stepfather's surname. Assuming Ellen was in her late teens / early 20s when she gave birth, I haven't found a likely Ellen before 1901 either.
Any ideas anyone, please?

I don't know if this is useful or not. It is certainly interesting.

Portsmouth Union Workhouse

Admission. Ellen PARKISS b 1859 and a son Alfred b 1879     Admitted 29 June 1881, discharged 24 Aug 1881.   Alfred recorded as dead 22 Jan 1883

son William born? 18 Feb 1888

No further note re William but Ellen discharged to the Inf[irmary]? 29 March 1898

I think that this Ellen is in the workhouse in the 1911 too. Age 55 in the register, Admitted in 1902 and discharged June 1911

I wonder if William survived, and if so, if he was a bricklayer?

Possible death for this Ellen?

Looks like William in the Workhouse 1901

Added.  On the same page of the workhouse register are

George Purkiss b 1840 (I think he Ellen 1859's father. added..or perhaps it is more likely he is her brother?) Discharged 1 Dec 1900
William Purkiss born 18 Feb 1888
Elizabeth who was admitted 10 November 1898
Information for William and Elizabeth provided by Mother.

Both William and Elizabeth were discharged on 26 March 1901. Above the date is a small 'S'
Some others have an 'H" which I take to mean Home? I don't know what 'S' indicates

Thank you Mckha489 for all the workhouse information. It certainly is a possibility. If she had several illeg children, then she could be older than I expected

Yes, it gives a birthdate a couple of months earlier than expected given baptism date, but still consistent with the birth quarter. I had assumed she was just in the workhouse infirmary to give birth, but if a habitual inmate then several weeks between birth and baptism quite reasonable.

There's an Ellen Eliza Purkiss (two ss) mmn Hosking  Q1 1858 Portsea and Ellen Purkis (one s) no mmn, Q1 1859 New Forest. The death in 1931 looks like the first one. I bet the one I'm looking for is the second one.

A few days before the census I wonder where they went?

William is actually still in the Workhouse 1901 on the census.  Haven’t found Elizabeth yet.
