Orangemen in Barrow in Furness
« on: Monday 17 August 20 16:23 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death of my ancester Henry / William Henry MCQUADE.

He was born in Belfast in ~ 1858 and married Mary Jane KEGG [various spellings] in 1877 in Barrow in Furness where he lived before moving to the Workington area before returning to Barrow.

The last record I have for him is 1899 when he was on the Electoral Register at Vernon Street, Barrow. His wife is shown as the head and married in the 1901 census and head and widowed in the 1911 census. The latter shows she was married 33 years which suggests she was widowed in 1910.

A family legend says he may have been injured or killed in some political rally etc but I have been unable to find a death. As he was I believe an Orangeman, can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

They were married 22 years ago, and it was said, the husband bad been lately working at Ramsden Dock, earning 30s. week —A separation was granted, McQuade to allow his wife 12s. a week.

Welcome to Rootschat

Can’t see any obvious death into the 1930’s.   Could he have gone back to Ireland after the divorce?

Here's the actual death certificate for the above Henry McQuade- says he was a bachelor & informant was a nephew-

Possible same man in 1911 census- age is off which isn't surprising- single & born Co.Armagh-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks to everyone for the prompt relies.

DonM - I hadnt thought of anything like that. Referring back to some notes, a second cousin said there were some "relationship problems" between Henry and Mary Jane according to his father & grand father and that they didnt talk to or about Henry.

CaroleW - I dont know but it is certainly a possibilty.

Garstonite - Yes and I have her birth cert. Your link to William is probably her brother.

Girl Guide / aghadowey - I thought you had cracked it but the link to the 1911 census records states he is a Catholic so incorrect.

I need to keep digging but this forum has proved very useful

Just a little more info to add, if you don't already have it.

The 1921 Census for Barrow in Furness 51 Vernon St has Mary McQuade, a widow, aged 67 years and 10 months born Ramsey, Isle of Man.

The online Manx iMuseum Indexes have a Mary Jane Kegg daughter of William Kegg, a Joiner, and his wife Mary, baptised 29 Aug 1852 in the parish of Maughold.  They were living Maughold St, Ramsey.

A variation in ages between the Censuses and this baptism, but looks like a good candidate for her.
