Ningwood, Newton by Chester
« on: Monday 17 August 20 21:53 BST (UK) »
This is a bit of a longshot i think. I have tried very nearly everywhere else.
I am looking for information on a house called 'NINGWOOD'
In 1901/1911 it was occupied by John Trevor Dickson (1868-1956) and his wife Amy.
John was part of a prominent family in the area at the time, Dickson's Nurserymen and Seed Merchants.

I cannot find a map that shows the house, or anything to do with the house other than the censuses mentioned.
I would also love to find a picture of John Trevor, or his father, George Arthur Dickson, J.P (1836-1909)

I have emailed places like the RHS, RASE and the royal botanical gardens. For a very prominent family they have left no photographic evidence.
I thank you in advance,
racheal

1901 just shows his address as Brook Lane - nothing about Ningwood.  1911 has Ningwood

I've had a quick search of he Welsh Newspapers online archive, given the proximity to the border, and John Trevor Dickson and his two sisters Hilda and Bertha are mentioned quite a few times. They all seem to use the surname Trevor Dickson - I got 79 hits using that phrase (in inverted commas), including reports of the two girls' marriages. John's short career as a local councillor and his acquittal in trial for dangerous driving in a motor car in 1906

Ningwood is also mentioned a few times as his address, but no helpful details to pin down the location

No photos found yet - no indeed an obituary of George

Mabel, thank you.
I will have a search of the Welsh newspapers. I have tried the newspapers on Findmypast but was Searching mainly in Cheshire.
The motor incident sounds interesting.

Have you tried Cheshire Archives ? www.cheshirearchives.org.uk In my experience they are very helpful people.
Good luck with your research.

I wonder if he renamed 'Springfield' in Newton to 'Ningwood' ? The 1900 Electoral Register has him at 'Springfield, Newton' and George died there a decade later. Just a thought. As you have probably already discovered off earlier maps, 'Springfield' is quite distant and it is also just off Brook Lane.

I'm not sure about that idea. John's address is given as Ningwood in adverts from 1900, whilst his father is still said to be living at Springfield on his death in 1909

Thanks SiGr,
I have contacted Cheshire Archives, obviously things are a bit difficult at the moment regarding visiting and stuff, but i have had an email back from them- they dont have any photos either.

I liked your idea of a name change for the house, but ive found a newspaper report for John Trevor from 1896, that says he lived at Ningwood.

Looking at the 1901 census, Brook lane is sandwiched between Well Lane and Conniston Lane. Looking at google maps there is a house today, right on the corner of Brook Lane/Newton Lane called Conniston (name on the gate post zoomed in). There is also a big detached house, around about number 114 Brook lane that is now flats. (parkinsons property rentals sign outside)
Does anybody think this house, 114, is old enough to be Ningwood?

Thanks

Racheal,
If you change the date on your Google Street View - the box in the upper left of the screen with the address in it - you can see a sign next to the door. It is two words but the resolution is not clear enough to read. Given it is two words, I suspect it does not read 'Ningwood'. Simon
