Tobacconist, Withers
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 07:32 BST (UK) »
In tracing Edwin Withers (1805-1882, Birmingham) I came across a number of references to "Withers Tobacconists" in Birmingham.
In the 1841 and 1861 Birmingham Census Edwin Withers is a Tobacconist at 7 (or 17) Worcester Street Birmingham (1850) selling the old fashioned bow windows (1848).
What also intrigues me is that up until 1915 "Withers Tobacco" is advertised. There is an image of "Withers Golden Virginia Tobacco" tin found at Alamy stock images. A newspaper advert 1915 refers to E.M. Withers at 59 Bull Street, 25 Paradise  and 2 Old Square.
Need help to find out how "E.M. Withers" is in anyway related to Edwin Withers.
Thank you

In the 1901 and 1911 censuses, 59 Bull Street is the home of Henry Cooke Withers, a tobacconist from Holt, Norfolk born circa 1847/8.

Henry's wife was Emma Maria. Possibly the "E M " in E M Withers (Tobacconist) Ltd? They appear to have arrived in Birmingham some time in the late 1890's.

Thanks for that clarification. So, no relation to my man and his family.
Cheers. Helps a lot.
