Marriage of Rebecca K. Mitchell, Pennsylvania, about 1871
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 18:30 BST (UK) »
Rebecca K. Mitchell was born on 11 January 1845 in Ohio.  [The date is from her grave and the birthplace from the censuses of 1850 and 1860].  Her parents were William Greenleaf Mitchell and Anne B. Denning.  I have not found her definitively on the 1870 census but there is a possibility in Montgomery County, PA, though the age and place of birth are off.

Her mother's obituary in 1883 refers to her as Mrs. Rebecca Hubler, living in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  Her father's obituary in 1899 refers to her as Mrs. Rebecca Hubler of Hanover, Pennsylvania.

In 1880, there was a Rebecca Hubler in Harrisburg with her husband Joseph Hubler, a railroad worker, and three children.  This is a good possibility but there are several problems:  her birthplace, her father's birthplace and the number of children.

On the 1900 census, Rebecca was in Hanover, PA and reported herself to be a widow with two children, none living.  She died in 1904 and is buried in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania with the surname Hubler.

However, if the Rebecca Hubler in Harrisburg was Rebecca K. Mitchell, then she was not a widow in 1900 and two of her three children were not dead.  That Joseph Hubler was alive in 1900 but with a different wife [Elizabeth C.]; he died in 1902.

There is a tree at FamilySearch that identifies 'Elizabeth C.' as Elizabeth C. McCahren.  To account for the 'Rebecca' in 1880, it assumes [without evidence] that she was also known as Rebecca.  I think that Rebecca K Mitchell was Joseph Hubler's first wife, that Elizabeth C. McCahren was his second wife and that Rebecca was the mother of Harry, Lillian, Nellie [and possibly also Ida].

>>>>>>>>>>>>

In short, I am looking for any evidence that Rebecca was married to and divorced from Joseph Hubler:  1) the marriage of Rebecca K. Mitchell and Joseph Hubler; 2) the divorce of Rebecca and Joseph; 3) birth data for the Hubler children which identifies their mother; and/or 4) the marriage of Joseph Hubler and Elizabeth C. McCahren.

The tree on familysearch (not sure of its accuracy) says they were married in 1872

Thanks.  Yes, that is the tree I referred to that assumes that Rebecca and Elizabeth C. are the same person.  I found that 1870 census for Elizabeth McCahren and also the census for Joseph Hubler; he was still single is 1870.

In the 1880 census, his wife is Rebecca. They were obviously 2 different persons from their death records. They must have divorced between 1880 & 1883 when Ida was born. Maybe the reason for divorce!!!!   Strange that he had custody of the children.

Not sure where to find US divorce records
