Missing birth certificates
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 19:51 BST (UK) »
What would be the reason for not being able to locate birth certificates for two members of a family? From the 1851 census I know that there are 9 children born from 1828 to 1850. All are listed as being born in Kettle, Fife. There is a birth certificate for Thomas (b1828) but nothing for Jessie (b1830) or Helen (b1832), however all the children after that are recorded. I've located Jessie's death certificate and it records her parents as listed in the census. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have found some relatives in England baptised after registration began (in 1837) but whose births were not registered.  Could the same situation have occurred in Fife?
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

Birth certificates didn’t start in Scotland till 1855. What you have probably found for births 1828 to 1850 are church baptism records. These often have gaps and not every child was baptised. So the records are far from complete.

Have you got the birth/baptisms from IGI or scotlandspeople?

Thomas's record on IGI has birth and baptism dates, the rest of the children that I can see only have an 'event' date.  Different church records?

Thanks. I tracked down the others it was just strange that I couldn't find a record for the two girls. The other query I had was why Jessie/Janet wasn't on the 1841 census but was on the 1851. I'm still learning so still lots of questions I'm afraid!

The other query I had was why Jessie/Janet wasn't on the 1841 census but was on the 1851.

Maybe she had a sleepover at her Grandparents! She had to be at home on the actual date of census to be included with her family.
