Is this the parish, or occupation?
« on: Friday 21 August 20 05:46 BST (UK) »
Could some one please decipher the word after Parish, in the marriage register.

The information I have is:
Name:    John Roscow
Gender:    Male
Event Type:    Marriage
Marriage Date:    19 Dec 1804
Marriage Place:    Middleton, St Leonard, Lancashire, England
Parish as it Appears:    Middleton
Spouse:    Betty Kirkman

I can work out as follows:
No: 997 John Roscoe of this Parish ?????????????
And Betty Kirkman of this Parish, Spinster
Married in this Church By Banns
This Thirteenth Day of December in the Year One Thousand eight Hundred and four by me ? R Aglingeton Curate

The only problem I have is the word after Parish

Any assistance will be very gratefully accepted

I think it might be Whitester - perhaps a version of Whitesmith?

Also, the surname looks to be spelt Roscow.

ADDED:

I think:  R A Singleton

I see "whitester" as well.  According to https://rmhh.co.uk/occup/w.html  it is a term for a cloth bleacher.

All the other entries on and around that page for grooms in the parish are occupations.

Thank you both for that information. I simply could not work it out :'(

I was not sure, as in some cases I have in my trees, it can be the parish name that is in that position, which was part of my query.

Again, many thanks to you both.

Added: the surname has two or three different spellings, which adds to the fun.

Same here.  I'm slowly learning to look at surrounding entries just to get the feel for how the person recorded things.
