Working at the Butte Montana Trading Post in 1904
« on: Friday 21 August 20 11:17 BST (UK) »
Trying to discover the social history /work of a distant ancestor . Elizabeth Ellen James b1862 emigrated with her family from Newlyn to Montana in 1903. I know little about her job and life in Montana back then. All i know is that she was a Manageress of a Trading Post in Butte around 1904. "Can anyone advise me on where i may find further info regarding this?" thank you .

These are a few related threads on the same subjects.  Have explored newspapers but only found article about her death.

There were many trading posts so possibly unlikely we will see another mention of Elizabeth.
Did you read the article Trading Posts and Their Stories

Before I get going on this, do you have her censuses in Butte, and have you looked at any city directories? If not, I will give it a try, but I don't want to duplicate what you already have.

@Sandra Thank you for the background links.
-------
I didn't find Elizabeth in the Butte City Directory, but there is a listing for a Richard James, confectioner in 1906. Did her husband go to Butte also? I assume so, since her obit said she was survived by her husband and 8 children. Here is the listing. If it is him, then he left Butte by the time the information for the 1907 Directory was gathered.

1906 Butte City Directory
James,
Richard, timberman Pennsylvania Mine, b 1011 Fausett
Richard, confectioner 134 W Park, rms same
    no Elizabeth

This man is also listed in the business section under Confectioners-Retail (See also Bakers, also Cigars-Retail; also Fruits-Retail). He is not listed under any of those other headings.

1907
James,
Richard, timberman, Penn Mine, b 1011 Fausett
    Richard, removed to Renton, Washington

Those were the only two Richard James for those years, so evidently the confectioner left, since the timberman remained.

---------
and by the way, there is a small family photo on a tree with Elizabeth at familysearch. Maybe whoever posted it can send you a bigger version. the link, in case you don't have it.

Except for ruling out the man who died, it's hard to tell if any of these is your Elizabeth's husband in the earlier directories:

1904 Butte City Directory
James,
Richard, clerk at Booth, r 600 W Silver
Richard P, laborer at Colorado Concentrator, r Main Sput Pk add
    Richard, died Jan 19, 1903, age 63
    no Elizabeth
1905
James,
Richard P, laborer, r Williamsburg
Richard, clerk, rms Washington block
Richard, life insurance agent, rms 75 W Park
no Elizabeth

One way to sometimes tell who is who, is by comparing previous city directories. Unfortunately for Butte, at ancestry.com, there is no 1901-1903 directories. But it looks like the Richard James, clerk, was there in 1900. and Richard P James, who was in the 1904 directory, is not there. So maybe your Elizabeth's husband worked as a laborer for a while before opening his own store. (Maybe to raise some funds ?)

here is the 1900 Directory:

1900 Butte City Directory
James,
Richard, clerk, Miners' Cash Grocery, rms 206 S Crystal
    Richard, miner, r 896 N Main, Centerville

The births for the children are all UK. Whereas on the Pennsylvania Nat Record he gives them all as US births ?
Holland Noyes was the only US birth in Montana 1903.
