I think this is where he was living prior to his death. Doornfontein is a Suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, and is located just to the East of the City Centre.  Doornfontein translates to Thorn Fountain. His street?

Thanks for that information, Barry.

I'm not sure when he arrived there.

I could not find him on Free BMD (born about 1970). He is recorded as being born in England.

Not much to add I am afraid. He lived in Sherwell Street, Doornfontein and died of tuberculosis.  Do you know who his wife was, and where they married?

Thankyou, Barry and Nookie.

A Thomas Herbert Rice (my ggUncle) was born in Nov. 1870 in Liverpool, England. After the 1881 census and his Mother dying, he disappears off the face of the earth.

I have looked at America etc., but couldn't find him. Then last week an email from Family Search led me to finding this one. He fits in 'virtually' perfectly. I don't know when he arrived or who he was married to.

I have searched everywhere I can think of but with no luck at all unfortunately.

I checked FindMyPast for a marriage/passenger list/probate, but nothing there.  Many tombstones have been photographed by volunteers here, but there is not one for him.

Run out of places to look  :'(
