Workhouses 1923
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 06:13 BST (UK) »
Have just discovered that my grandfather spent six weeks in the Medway Poor Union Workhouse.
Can anyone tell me if alcoholics, which my grandfather certainly was, were periodically admitted to dry out?
He had a wife and family at home. How would they have managed without my grandfather's income? My grandfather was a shipwright at the Chatham docks, but I believe he lost his job because of his drinking.
Was there any financial support for families in the 1920s?

The family could apply for Parish Relief. See under "Decline and abolition" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Poor_Laws#After_the_New_Poor_Law

Was he in the main workhouse or the infirmary part? He may have been suffering from a drink-related illness. Is there an admissions register?

The admission register is on Ancestry where I discovered it. No other information or explanation is given. I contacted a relative in the UK who will go check the archive at Kew.
Thank you for the information re parish support for familites in hardship.
Cheers, Margery

Availability of records for Medway workhouse is shown at the bottom of the page on this link
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Medway/

Any records available appear to be at Medway Archives centre or Ancestry.  It would be worth checking what is available before your relative visits Kew.

Any records that Medway Archives hold may not be available due to the 100 year rule.
