Tracing family in England
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 08:18 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I'm hoping to find some information on my family from England. My Great Grandfather James Churton was born on 18/07/1848 in Middlesex and his wife  Sarah Jane Churton nee Rowe born in 1856. They were married in All Saints Church 31/03/1877. In 1881 they were living in 90-91 Oxford Street London (census).  I can't find anything else until they appear in New Zealand around 1897.
I would love to find out anything more on Sarah. Her father's name was James.

Hi there

This could be Sarah in 1871

James Rowe 48
Mary A 30
James P 22
Sarah J 15
Emily 2
Walter R 7
William 5

Have you got her fathers occupation from the marriage please?

This James was a tradesman born Suffolk.

Would guess Mary A is a second wife as she is too young to have been the mother of a 22 year old son.

Mary Ann Sheppard married James Rowe in 1860 so his first wife must have been the mother of your Sarah.

Having said that James is noted as a bachelor not a widower so might be leading you astray there.

1861

James Rowe 37 widower licensed victualler born Suffolk
James P 12 son
Sarah 5 daughter
Fanny 28 sister housekeeper born Suffolk

This might be son James if the P was a C

James Charles Rowe birth 1848 St Pancras mothers name Smith

1851

James Rowe 29
Sarah 32
James 2

So Sarah could be the mother of your Sarah and then she died and James remarried.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

There is a marriage March quarter 1847 St George Hanover Square where James Rowe and Sarah Eliza Smith appear on the same page.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Transcription of the marriage - St Paul, Wilton Place, Knightsbridge - James is aged 24 and Sarah Eliza is 28.  No date for the marriage given.

Possible death for Sarah Eliza - June quarter 1861 - Bethnal Green - Sarah Eliza Rowe aged 46.
