Elizabeth Read/Reed

I'm trying to locate a christening for a woman named Elizabeth Read who I believe married my ancestor James Holden at Lewes St Michael in 1803.

I've found these two potential candidates:

Elizabeth Read christened 15 June 1788 at Lewes - parents James and Mary

Elizabeth Reed christened 18 April 1784 at Brighton - parents William and Abigail

Given that Lewes and Brighton are so close either could be the person I'm looking for.

So far I've not been able to locate a burial for either in order to eliminate one.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can sort this mystery out and establish which Elizabeth I should follow up?

Elizabeth MAY just have named their eldest daughter after her own mother - which was often the case.

These are the children I have found for James and Elizabeth Holden:

John - April 1806 Brighton

Henry - June 1808 Brighton

George - August 1814 Brighton [my ancestor]

Thomas - December 1815 Brighton - died before 1820

Hannah - May 1817 Brighton - she married John Trussler in 1838

Thomas - April 1820 Brighton

I suspect that John was probably named after James Holden's father.

Unfortunately there is no sign of an Elizabeth, nor a James or William amongst the children so it's hard to link them to the Reeds I'm looking at.

I am hoping I can find a clue in wills but anything you can suggest will be a great help.

Yep as far as I know they only had the one daughter.

It would have been useful if there was an Abigail or a Mary but alas no such luck. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Elizabeth christened in Lewes being the one who married James but only because it's in the same parish and it seems likely that they were probably both of that parish.

Correction to my list of children. James and Elizabeth did have another daughter:

Sarah Holden christened 29 September 1811 at Brighton.

Looking at the christenings for the two Elizabeths again I have realised something.

The Elizabeth christened in Lewes in 1788 would only be 12 in 1803 when the marriage to James Holden took place.

On the other hand the Elizabeth who was christened in Brighton in 1784 would be about 19.

It therefore seems more likely that it is the Elizabeth who was christened in Brighton that I should be following up.

James and Elizabeth were both described as being "otp" when they married in Lewes in 1803 but Brighton and Lewes are only about 5 miles apart so Elizabeth [and James] could have easily moved there.

James possibly christened in Brighton in 1778 [son of John Holden and Susannah Roofe] or he may have been christened in Lewes in 1766. There is a christening there dated 5 November 1766 which reads "James Holder son of James and Elizabeth Holder"

Could "Holden" have been misread as "Holder"? Possible if the writing is faint. Unfortunately I've not been able to see the actual document myself yet.

I have had a look at them but they didn't ring any bells. The witnesses to the 1803 marriage appear to be the following:

William Hubbard
_____ Hubbard

Joseph Finlay?

The first name of the second witness may be Terry or Tarry or maybe Sarah.
