Thanks rosie99 for posting what I'd already found on marriage locator.  I could have given chapter and verse in my original post but I know that people tend to switch off after the first paragraph or get sidetracked, so I've learned not to do that.

The Horsham area is not well-served by 20th century online records.  I have drawn a blank with the usual resources - familysearch, marriage locator, FindMyPast, Ancestry, freereg, freeBMD, historical directories, mySoG.  I've not managed to check newspapers because I don't have a sub to the BNA and my FindMyPast sub has just expired, if someone fancies trying that for me do be my guest.  But anyway, asking for a look-up was a last resort.  It's not desperately urgent and can wait till we have a vaccine if that's what it takes.  Or until one of the subscription sites does a deal with West Sussex record office.  Just dotting the Is and crossing the Ts.

For the record, and to demonstrate that I am able to think laterally and put in the work, I found Alice on the 1939 register using just her birthdate and first name.  The last I'd known of her previously was that she was widowed as a fairly young bride, apparently childless, in WW1.  I imagined that she might have remarried but with a surname of SMITH I didn't hold out a lot of hope of finding her.  I was thankful that she wasn't a Mary or an Elizabeth!  I wasn't expecting to find her in Horsham but I'd chased through her siblings and the widower of one of her sisters is listed at the same address.  I then discovered that although she didn't marry again till 1935, she was producing children in the meantime and regarded as Mrs WIBLING.  "Husband" Jesse had another wife (or two) elsewhere in the country, and his own lineage has turned out to be shrouded in mystery.  I'm fairly confident that the woman I'm enquiring about is "my" Alice but having her father's name would confirm it.

Jane :-)

Quote
1940 Q2 - Percy E SOUTH married Alice E WIBLING ref 2b 1185

Horsham RD covered many areas

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/horsham.html

Probably indexed alphabetically by parish
Sussex newspapers
14 June 1940
At Horsham Parish Church, Ernest George Wallace Jenkins, son of... and Joan Maude Wicking, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D, Wicking
GRO index, June 1940, vol 2b, page 1154

Friday 7 June 1940
The marriage took place at Holy Trinity Church, Rudgwick, on Wednesday, of Mr. Geoffrey Wyndham Humphrey, son of Mr. and the late Mrs. M. Humphrey, of the Post Office. Rudgwick
That's on page 1169

Friday 10 May 1930
MISS NANCY BRIGHT, of Amberfield, Slinfold, and Mr. Sydney McCormac(??), of London, whose marriage takes place at St. Peter's, Slinfold, on May...
That's on page 1173

Looking iffy that the South-Wibling marriage on 1185 might be in a parish church.

June qtr 1935 marriage on vol 2b page 863
Horsham marriages in the GRO index end on 867. So even less likely to be PR.

I seem to recall reading somewhere many moons ago that the GRO refs were indeed allocated alphabetically by Anglican parish, with non-con and civil at the end.  So thankyou jonw65, I agree that register office is beginning to look favourite.  With an existing wife or wives possibly still living it's perhaps understandable  ;)

best wishes
Jane :-)

He Married my Great Granny in Dorset they had a little girl that died only a few months old, they went on to have more children one was my Grandad, Jesse had something to do with Horses but I don't know what, they moved to Ireland when my Grandad was 2 yrs old, while in Ireland he one day left my Great Granny and never returned, they never divorced, so if he remarried he would of been a bigamist
My Great Granny died in Ireland aged 103, I am trying to my family tree and with Jesse it difficult.
