William and Lauretta Hodgkins
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 11:14 BST (UK) »
William and Lauretta Hodgkins baptised at least 3 children at Bromsgrove, St John the Baptist, between 1798 and 1812:

William, 24 June 1798
George, 31 December 1809
Charles, 27 September 1812

I suspect there were more children, considering the large gap between William and George.

In 1825, a widowed Lauretta married John Delahay in Birmingham. One of the witnesses was a Thomas Hodgkins, possibly another son?

I am having difficulty finding out anything about William Hodgkins at all. I have 2 possible burials for him, both in 1812, and I haven’t found a marriage for William and Lauretta either.

Does anyone know if all the records for St John the Baptist are online? I’m beginning to suspect there must be gaps in the records.

Are these the burials you have for William Jr?

WILLIAM HODGKISS
15 Jan 1812, aged 36

WILLIAM HODGKINS
6 Dec 1812, pauper

It looks like Charles was baptised as “Charles Hodgkis”  ???

And this might be your Lauretta in 1841...

West Bromwich, Staffordshire
Releta(?) Deley(?), 60, born in county
John Hodgins, 5, born in county

Evidently John Delahay has died between 1825 and 1841, unless he’s living elsewhere. Have you found Lauretta’s death?

Yes this looks like her! I have a Lauretta Delay whose death was registered in Dudley RD in the final quarter 1850. Not sure about this one though.

Are you certain her second husband was Delahay? Have you seen the image or just a transcription for the 1825 marriage?

I’ve seen the image and it’s definitely John Delahay a bachelor, and Lauret Hodgkins a widow. Marriage took place 27 June 1825 and the witnesses were Thomas Hodgkins and Hannah Cooper. None of the people names above signed the register.

Ok that's great!

I think I've found some more of William and Lauretta's children, although Lauretta is transcribed as "Lariot" most of the time  ;D

Thomas Hodkins, 27 June 1802 at Bromsgrove, St John the Baptist (your 1825 witness??)
John Hogkins, 30 June 1805 at same place
Joseph Hogkins, 18 May 1807

The last baptism is Charles in 1812 (which you already have)

Thank you so much for finding this out jimnix. Yes Lauretta’s name varies between ‘Larret’ and ‘Lariot’ to ‘Lawrett”. I suspect she was the Lauretta Albutt baptised at Bromsgrove in 1778 but I haven’t been able to find a marriage for William Hodgkins to a Lauretta.
