Reginald Henry DICKINS & Emily DICKINS - Stewkley
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 12:17 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I am researching the history of the Post Office in Stewkley.
I have found extensive information about the Dickins family and their connection to the post office and shop from 1892 onwards - postmaster William Dickins who died in 1908, was then succeeded by his daughter Emily (born 1869, died 1943).

In the 1939 Kelly's Trade Directory, Regnld Hy. Dickins (I am working to Hy. standing for Henry) is listed as the shop keeper and sub-post master. This is where the information I have about him ends. He father Henry was also a shop keeper and is listed in the 1911 census as a Grocer and Newsvendor).

I am struggling to see how Reginald connects to Emily. I also have no information about Emily having any children or her marriage and would appreciate any insight that anyone here has!

I have gone so far, but desperate to know how they are connected!

Thank you in advance

Does there have to be a connection between them?  Aside from the fact they have the same surname that is.

Doesn't appear Emily married or had children - she is still single 4 years before she died.

What year was the Reginald Hy born?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos

Correct, no. But the names led me to that.
Reginald Hy was born 1898 and died 1963. Ancestry opened up a lot of information about him today. He enlisted in the war before returning home and getting married. He lived at the property I am buying at the point of his death. His father, Henry Dickins, was also a shopkeeper by trade. I was just interested in how we came to be the sub postmaster.
Before he started a person named George Wheeler had the role until at least 1935.
By 1939, Reginald was working at the post office.

Do you know when William Dickins was born?

Going way back from Henry his father Joseph had a brother William.

William was born in 1834. His father was George (b 1798/1801), his Mother Mary (b 1798/1801), brother David (b 1821), brother John (b 1830/1831).

And yes, Henry's father was called Joseph (b 1834 and he was a wheelwright). I believe they had a connection to the property also.

Milliepede, I'm struggling to find the connector of Joseph to a sibling called William. Where did you find this?

I have just found this but the dates don't line up. William was born in 1869. Thank you so much for your input though!

You mean Henry was born 1869 not William.

Possible
William father of Emily Jane was the son of Thomas Dickins and Susanna nee Thorpe based on census information and birth circa 1834
1841 Thomas and Susanna are in Mursley.
