I am trying to confirm my late Fathers service number.
He served in the Army in WW11 , I have the date of his medical discharge in 1944 via a hospital ship from North Africa . I can supply the relevant birth and death certificates . Can you help please ?'

Are you wanting to apply for his service record?

It is useful but not necessary when completing the application form.
