Looking for Edith Hawtin in 1911
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 17:28 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

I would be really grateful if you could spare a few moments to help me with this puzzle

What I don't know

I am trying to find Edith Hawtin on the 1911 census.

So far I have had zero luck. I've tried spelling variations as Hawtin seems to get spelled a lot of different ways. I've also tried looking for her on the census records of her known relatives at the time but with zero joy. I've tried newspapers as well and have turned nothing up.

As you can see below, I know quite a bit about her, it's just 1911 where she is missing.

What I do know

What I do know is that she was born 13 May 1882, in Nottingham, probably in Bingham.

In 1891 she is in Nottingham with her Mum, Elizabeth and other relatives (dad had died by this point)

In 1901 she's in Nottingham again, still with her Mum and other relatives.

She had an unfortunate decade after this as all her close family died, including her Mum in 1908.

There is the gap in 1911 when I can't find her.

After that, she migrated to America in 1912 (couldn't find her in America in 1910 census or any other migration records so don't think there were any prior trips).

She married in San Francisco in 1912 and became Edith England, and then moved briefly to Dayton Ohio before moving back to Nottingham, England in 1919.

I know she was still in Nottingham in 1939, that she had two children, one in America and one in England and that she died in 1955.

She worked as a machinist making stays in 1901, if she ever had any other occupation I'm not aware of it.

Thank you so much for reading.

What actual date is shown for her arrival in NY
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

You have put:
'she migrated to America in 1912 '

Do you have details about that, or worked out the date from other records?

She arrived on 23rd March and her nearest relative was her aunt Mrs Mackay, Kirk Hill, Shepped, Leicester.

Was her husband John Dalton England, and did they meet in England or USA?

John Dalton England is in San Francisco on 1910 census, arrived 1907, staying with the Short family and is their nephew.

Hello,

Thanks everyone.

I'm sorry, I should have said that I do have her records for her move to America, which are what chempat has shared above.

Her husband was John Dalton England.

I'm not sure where she met John Dalton England. He had migrated to America in 1907, and he is on the census there in San Francisco in 1910 and she isn't with him. They got married there in 1912.

I've looked for alternate journeys to America for her and turned nothing up.

I also can't find any evidence that he went back to England between his arrival in 1907 and his eventual departure in 1919 (when they travelled home together and both stayed in England).

The reason I'm doubtful about when they met is that they got married only 50 days after she arrived in America, which makes it seem like it was planned and they knew each other from before, as that isn't very long before a wedding. I know it's not unheard of, but still.

Also, Edith did have one living relative, an Aunt in a different part of America, but she didn't go to her and she had San Francisco as her final destination which makes it seem more likely that she planned to go there.

So unfortunately that bit is unclear.

Another possible factor is that Edith's mother died in an insane asylum in 1908. Given that John migrated in 1907 it did make me wonder if she'd planned to go with him in 1907 but didn't because her mother became ill? She was her mother's only child, her father was dead and it seems like most of her mothers relatives who were in England had also died, so Edith might have been the only one who could support her.

I hope that all made sense.

Just to be clear, the Aunt who moved to America did so before Edith was even born, so she isn't a factor for the 1911 census. Sorry.

Have you discounted Edith Hawkers in Nottingham in 1911?
